To recreate the issue:

From a new text document, click Format, Numbering/Bullets, then select the 
Position tab.  Set the "spacing to text" value to something other than 0.  (The 
default value in inches is 0.20".) Click Ok to exit the menu.  Click the icon 
to turn numbering on, type "Line one", then enter and "Line two". Save the 
document to Word97/2000/XP format.  Open the document in Word97.  Note there is 
no space between the number and the text "Line one".

As mentioned on the qa dev list on March 5th I will close all resolved duplicate
issues. Please see this posting for details. First step in IssueZilla is
unfortunately to set them to verified.
