Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 5899
High / Low position letter bug
Last modified: 2003-10-08 15:33:40 UTC
if cursor is "in" a word, selecting "lower letter" (german: tiefstellen) because one wants to insert sth index-like, the complete word becomes lowered instead of just "the cursor" having this feature to lower the next typed letters. What else if not such bugs are P1 ? These are the things to be fixed ! Just in case you wondered? Or do you "expect" bugs like "Oh, OOo formated my HD"...
Hi Lars, this is not a bug ! If you select the character to sub/superscript this will be done correctly, if you place the cursor at the end of the word and select sub/superscript this works only for the next characters. If you place the cursor into a word and do not select a character the whole word is set to sub/superscript if you want to. This is a feature. Your priorisation is much to high ! This is the extract of the fast Help from Issuezilla : Priority This field describes the importance and order in which an issue should be fixed. This field is utilized by the programmers/engineers to prioritized their work to be done. You seem, this field should be set by the developers and not by the submitters. Frank

Don't expect you will read (or anyone) - perhaps you already had the idea yourself - CHANGE the SUB-/SUPERSCRIPT BEHAVIOUR ; it should always work like 1). "highlight text" 2). "apply function" or "cursor receives current attributes" so that next typed letters have got these attributes. (Color chooser in Writer had a not-intuitive beahviour too) alternatively you could give an user the option to choose the behaviour. P.s.: As I regard such not-intuitive, against normal behaviour behaving functions as bugs, I would change ("fix") them; this added to the reason already in the first post why P1.
just "accidentally" came across this "old" issue from me and after reading it, I have to say I have to reopen it as an enhancement suggestion with the following main idea: Qutoe myself: alternatively you could give an user the option to choose the behaviour.
Hi Falko, 1 4 u. Frank PS. It works like all other Offices work and I think it's Ok this way.
see issue 4993 on why OPTION is a good way.
Hi Lars, please don't change any flags especially the owner after submitting an issue. Any subcategory has its responsible engineers which have the knowledge of the responsible developers. So if you change flags by yourself, you will slow down the processing. Regards, Oliver
If you do not select any text and try to apply any(!) formatting the cursor will change to the "Wasserkanne". Thatr's how it works all over the office and will not be changed.

"If you do not select any text and try to apply any(!) formatting the cursor will change to the "Wasserkanne"." that's exactly what it doesn't do: enter text, place the cursor inside a "word", use sub- or superscript: the whole word gets sub/superscripted. I have always found this unwanted. This is also valid for font size where I have always found this unwanted too. (I can select a whole word via double click when I want so which I can also achieve with middle click, so it's no additional effort there). But perhaps the current behaviour is useful for most other users (most of the time).
Sorry for wrong answer: 1. There is no(!) icon for sub/superscript in Calc anyway 2. We behave different from what I said but nevertheless we behave in common sense. Please have a look to Word and others.
Please do not re-open!
I just set the components etc. correctly.
