Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 58220
General error on opening existing spreadsheet file as database
Last modified: 2013-08-07 15:45:41 UTC
Create some database file, for example Spreadsheet file. Now go New - Database (or start sbase), choose Open Existing, click on Open... button to browse filesystem, and select the file. General error. The database program opens, of course complains for non-existent connection to db source. If You click on More, You can look at error log and we read "SQL Status: S1000 The connection to the external data source could not be established. An unknown error occurred. The driver is probably defective." Since this causes crash in basic functionality, I give it P2.

My colegue feels that this bug was introduced lately in 2.0 developement -he feels like some beta version hasn't had such problem. Although I repeated this error on m130 and m128.
Confirmed on Windows XP SP2 with OOo 2.0.0: start sbase, choose Open Existing, click on Open..., browse filesystem and select the file attached: General error occurs on loading
hi, this is because the sxc file is no database, it's a spreadsheet. Spreadsheet files can't be open as a database. close as INVALID. Bye Marc
P.S.: May be you want to write am enhancement, to open all kinds of document with the database wizard.
The program shouldn't end up with "General error". If the spreadsheet is not supported, program should 1, state it clearly ("Not a valid DATABASE file" or so) 2, or even don't allow opening the spreadsheet file type either. "General error" means nothing but plain scare for ordinary user. He dosen't know, what's wrong and feels like "program generally dosen't function".
Mark, I have reported the enhancement (Issue 58324) as You suggested. Please implement the correct warning message until the support was added. Bye, Peter
Hi, the described defect doesn't occur, if you choose 'connection to a existing database' instead of 'open a existing database'. You must then select the type in the dropdownlist. Selecting 'open a existing database' affects IMO only OOo-Database.
msc -> fs: Please add a warning about the invalid file type.
