Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 57043
Complete the feature "send active document as " on Mac OS X for other mua's
Last modified: 2013-07-30 02:43:36 UTC
Description : On Mac OS X, Mail (Mail.app) is currently used by default to "send active document as mail" is used, without do anything. Objective of this issue : make it work at least for mail user agents like Mail, Thunderbird, Mozilla (maybe other Mac OS X native application -means an *.app does exist- ) Inventory of what works, and what does not : Currently, on Mac OS X (both Panther and Tiger), what works and what does not, entering a string in E-mail program, after selecting Tools->Options->Internet-E-mail Working strings : 1) (empty string) : Mail is used as default application. 2) /Applications/Mail.app opens correctly Mail 3) /Applications/thunderbird.app/Contents/MacOS/thunderbird-bin opens correctly thunderbird (tested with thunderbird 1.0.7) Non working strings : 1) /Applications/Mail.app/Contents/MacOS/Mail 2) thunderbird 3) /Applications/thunderbird 4) /Applications/thunderbird.app 5) /Applications/Mozilla.app/Contents/MacOS/mozilla-bin : browser opens, not mua.
Ooops, description was wrong. I propose a new and understandable version : Description : On Mac OS X, Mail (Mail.app) is currently used by default to "send active document as mail" , without do anything.
This is rather a task then a feature.

ericb->obr Sorry, I reopne this issue it does not work as expected Tests made on Mac OS X 10.4.3 / gcc-4.0.1 / m149 Customization : Tools -> Options -> Internet -> E-mail -> Mail client Works with : 1) empty string, Mail is used by default 2) using : /Applications/Mail.app/Contents/MacOS/Mail Does *not* work with : 1) /Applications/tunderbird.app -> does not start 2) /Applications/tunderbird.app/Contents/MacOS/tunderbird.bin -> Document is not attached or problem if Thunderbird is already started 3) /Applications/Mozilla.app/Contents/MacOS/mozilla : does not open mozilla mailer ...and session problems if Mozilla is already open. 4) /Applications/Mozilla.app : nothing occurs
Hi eric, #2 and #3 won't work with "open" and I don't think these are valid use cases. What _should_ work are #1 and #4. Did you try without path as well (e.g. "thunderbird.app", "Mozilla.app") ?
ericb->obr I have tested 2 and 3 because it's not possible to validate when a directory is choosen, excepted when you write yourself the path. I guess Mac users will do excatly the same : select until choice can ba validated. I have tried : Mozilla.app opens the active document inside Mozilla thunderbird.app does not work : thunderbird opens, and that's all What do we use for 1.1.x ? FYI, Patrick Luby provided a fix for Mozilla wrapper. I'm perhaps wrong, but isn't it possible to reuse it ? ( I can attach the patch if you need it) [OT] I'm still buzy with my job today and tomorrow. After, I'll have a lot of time to have a look. Sorry, I cannot before
Seems that I need to look more deeply into what Mozilla/Thunderbird do in their launch/apple scripts.
re-assigned.
shifting target again due to lack of time / resources.
obr: Is this not a Thunderbird problem and not an OpenOffice.org problem? I think this was pointed out in the mac@porting mail list when I complained that Mail was opened and not Thunderbird when sending out an attachment (which works BTW.) James M.
I assume you are referring to https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=287345. This would explain why the open -a variant does not work with thunderbird, but I still would like to evaluate this further just to be sure. Also: the variant of choosing thunderbird.app/Contents/MacOS/thunderbirdthunderbird launch script directly should still work, as this does not go through open -a.
ericb->obr What is the current status ? Maybe we should test : the bug is probably fixed ?
I just checked again with Thunderbird 1.5.0.4: it still does not support attaching documents via "open -a", which https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=287345 is about, and also thunderbird-bin seems not to support the "-remote" switch:( So even if the user would fiddle through the path to thunderbird-bin, the document only gets attached when thunderbird is not already running. => Thunderbird problem, closing as INVALID.
Reopening Issue and Will keep track because this has become a topic of discussion on the users@openoffice.org mailing list.
Assigning issue to myself as issue as one for QA team to see if Thunderbird mail resolved this problem. This problem may also affect other UNIX operating systems. James McKenzie
AQssigning self as QA. This problem may also affect other UNIX/Linux combinations. With 2.0.4 a Thunderbird window is brought up if the Email application is set to /Applications/Thunderbird.app but no attachment is added to the outgoing message. The default of Mail works as designed and can be used as an outbound mailer in the interim. This is not an Invalid issue, but needs to be tracked until the Mozilla team fixes it.
@obrmac: I just looked at how Mozilla type mailers are invoked under other UNIX/Linux platforms and we may have to switch to the same method to perform this function. More to come. James McKenzie
Last time I checked, forwarding the argument from a 2nd instance of Thunderbird to an already running instance did not work for the native Thunderbird port as it does for the X11 port. Having to quit Thunderbird to be able to use "Send document as e-mail" seemed not acceptable to me. Let me know if this changed. As stated in http://porting.openoffice.org/servlets/ReadMsg?list=mac&msgNo=3019, I think the most promising approach for this issue is to completly switch to apple script for OS X. I hope the links stated there are still valid. Unfortunatly I am not an apple script expert, but I could help changing the call to the senddoc shell script to some apple script. Maybe it is even possible to detect the users preferred e-mail client, so that we could get rid of the corresponding Tools=>Options=>Internet=>E-Mail in OpenOffice.org (as it is on Windows).
found an additional bug at bugzilla.mozilla.org: 316177, unable to call Thunderbird with -compose with attachment. This is fixed in the beta cycle for Thunderbird 2. This may fix the problem with calling Thunderbird with /usr/open -a. Will try to get the beta and test.... James McKenzie
difficult to solve.
@Mox: Yes it is difficult to solve when the program's producer does not follow standards. Thunderbird does not respond properly to /usr/open -a in its present version. James McKenzie
