Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 556
The archive for discuss is too large
Last modified: 2007-09-23 15:34:26 UTC
Could someone please shrink down or break apart the archive for discuss? Its way to big. See: http://www.openoffice.org/www-discuss/current/ br
One thing we could do is to change how MHonArc works so that it breaks up listings of messages into multiple pages. The number of messages per page is configurable (though it's hard to go back up once you've gone down). You can see an example of how this is at http://www.openoffice.org/www-nbdev/ ; setting it up as it is there is relatively straightforward. However, it'll look just like that, including the lack of first/last navigation links in the threads page (unless more work is done) -- there's next and previous, but just that. And it's somewhat more work to do this for some lists but not all.
The netbeans example is fine. Set it up like they have it. Thanks.

We've had a spurt of activity on the main discuss list re: this Issue. We've had a suggestion (by Sander) and a +1 (James Cleare) to split the archived list by month instead of by number of posts: http://www.openoffice.org/www-discuss/current/msg02444.html http://www.openoffice.org/www-discuss/current/msg02448.html I concur, becase often people on the list refer to past threads by date, say, "Check out the X thread back in January". If we do things the way Netbeans is implemented, folks have to page back by hand, one page by one page, right? Pretty tedious if you want to go back 4 or 6 months. For people on slow connections, it might not be viable at all. Ed, would it be possible to somehow add functionality that allows people to jump to an arbitrary month or even week?
This requires significant additional work. If you look at other sites using MHonArc, you'll find that they tend to split messages up by year -- and within the year, they'll find a division which corrsponds to roughly reasonable slices of time. There are improvements which can be made, but within the context of using MHonArc, it is not trivial to support per-month groupings (ie. it can be done, it'll just take programming to do it on an ongoing basis) -- and it's more or less impossible to support both per-month and per-week groupings. That's why we're switching to eyebrowse -- it does allow grouping by month, or thread, or author; and it'd be easy to add additional groupings (eg. by week).
Understood. Just go ahead with plan "A" then, and we'll look forward to eyebrowse. Is eyebrowse part of SourceCast 1.0?
Is there anything we can do on this issue in the short term? The file is almost 500k and a pain to view when you are on a modem. I would like to get this fixed in the short term.
I went ahead and did this. Please tell me if there are any problems ...
This does not appear to be fixed.Nothing appears to have been fixed.
If you look at various archives, you'll find that all the archives which are recieving messages are being split up as the messages come in. The way this works, the archives won't get split up until a new message is recieved. I can trigger that by sending a message to the list, if you'd like. As examples of lists which have been split up (because they've recieved messages): http://porting.openoffice.org/porting-dev/ http://www.openoffice.org/www-cvs/
Appears to be fixed now.
