Description johnvile 2005-10-06 09:01:34 UTC
Word documents downloaded from e-mail manager in Firefox will not open with
Openoffice.org 2.0 Beta but will with Openoffice.org 1.1.3.
Using Fedora core3 or Vector Linux 5.0.
Will try to attach an example file
file:///home/john/Desktop/Templar
Comment 1 michael.ruess 2005-10-06 09:15:07 UTC
Framework issue.
Comment 2 Rainer Bielefeld 2005-10-06 14:36:59 UTC
To me it seems to be a Firefox problem and not an OOo problem. May be OOo 1.1.3
still is listed in the "helper applications" or something else in Firefox.

@johnvile
IMHO this issue is invalid, if for other applications (or my be something like
doubleclick on WORD file in Linux file browser) will use your current OOo
2.0Beta to open WORD documents. Can you please contribute some details
concerning this question?

Comment 4 Rainer Bielefeld 2005-10-06 17:55:15 UTC
Hi johnvile,

the problem is definitively not caused by your attached document (My
"Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; de-AT; rv:1.9a1) Gecko/20050914
SeaMonkey/1.1a") opens it with "2.0 (1.9.m125) German version WIN XP:
[680m125(Build8947)]" as expected.

I am pretty sure that it's also nothing with your OOo.

Pls. answer to my questions (comments from rainerbielefeld Thu Oct 6 06:36:59
-0700 2005) and check your FIREFOX-configuration. I do no use FIREFOX, in my
MOZILLA I can change such prefeences in Menu - edit - preferences - navigator -
helper applications. There I have to set "C:\Programme\OpenOffice.org
1.9.125\program\swriter.exe" for mime-type "application/msword". I think that
there is something similar in FIREFOX. If you can not find that in FIREFOX, pls
ask in a FIREFOX-usergroup.
Comment 5 johnvile 2005-10-06 22:26:16 UTC
Ok. I hope these are the details you need.
I use Fedora 3 or Vectorlinux 5.0. I get my email through a service similar to
hotmail (called doctors.net.uk). When a word attachment is sent, I can either
open it or save to disk and then open from within the application. In either
case, if I use 1.1 it works. If I use 2.0 beta it comes up as a read err - error
reading file. So, for the file which I attached, if I try to open with 2.0 beta
from a copy on the disk, I get the error message, whereas 1.1 will still open
it. Therefore there is something that 1.1 will do that 2.0 beta won't and it
seems to be independent of Firefox and will stop lots of people switching from
1.1 to 2.0.
Please let me know if there are more details that you need.

@johnvile:
I'm sorry, but I still do not have any idea what your problem might be. There is
nothing wrong gwith your file with one exception only: the correct rile name
extension is missing. But I can open it without any problem, directly from the
browser and also from harddisk. I tried
(1.9.m113) German version WIN XP: [680m113(Build8930)]
(1.9.m118) English version WIN XP: [680m118(Build8936)]
(1.9.m125) German version WIN XP: [680m125(Build8947)]
All opened the document without problem.

After your last report I do not believe that it has to do with FIREFOX, because
you have the same problem to open a copy of the document from the harddisk.

We still do not have a simple and clear instruction how to reproduce your
problem, we even do not have a clear description what your problem is: "A read
error message" is a little weak.

Another Question: do you only have that problem with WORD documents you got by
e-mail or also for other ones (download from web, from CD, ...)

Please:
- if possible, change to the current version, beta2 is outdated
- Contribute a step by step instruction containing any key press and mouseclick
you do to open the document, starting with "Open OOo by ... "
- Contribute the complete wording of the error message (may be screenshot)
- Tell us your experiance with other word documents you did not get by e-mail
- pls. try to open 'GarlandsWindowPrices.doc' from issue 50942 and tell us your
  experience.
Comment 7 johnvile 2005-10-07 17:29:47 UTC
thanks for that - your comments have helped me to clarify the problem.
For some reason, word attachments get downloaded onto my hard drive with no
extension.
If I try to open the document from within 2.0beta with no extension then I get
the error message "Read error - error reading file" - I will send a screenshot
of this.
If I rename the document with a .doc extension, then 2.0beta opens it fine. From
your description, the Linux version needs an extension whereas the Windows
version does not.
1.1.3 will open the file with or without an extension.
It might be worth trying to add this functionality to the Linux version.
I am about to try to upgrade to 2.0rc and will let you know how that does.

@johnvile:
I hope, we now have the correct summary, and I believe that's a bug. OOo shoud
not "blindly" trust to wrong or missing filename extensions.

Could you pls. check whether you can reproduce that problem for EXCEL-files with
missing ".xls" or similar?
Comment 10 Rainer Bielefeld 2005-10-07 18:40:16 UTC
I can confirm the problem with attached document "Templar" for 2.0 (1.9.m125)
German version WIN XP: [680m125(Build8947)].
When I try to open that file from harddisk by doubleclick from WIN EXPLORER, OOo
2.0 fails with the error message as visible in attached "screen2".
Same problem if I try to open from OOo file menu.

The problem does not appear if I open attached "Templar" directly from my
seamonkey-browser, it seems that the correct mime type is forwarded to OOo (and
accepted).

This problem was not visible in 1.1.4 (German) WIN XP: [645m52 (Build 8824)]

This seems to be a special WRITER problem. I also tried to open an EXCEL
document with missing ".xls" extension - that worked fine with 680m125

Can we get that fixed in 2.0.1?
