Description Unknown 2002-06-03 21:27:08 UTC
The same sequence of events that used to crash SO6.0 Beta occured for the first
time today, the next day of installing OO1.0.0. (As it was installed it
monopolized all my WordPad documents and all other documents that have
paintakingly individually converted manually from .sxw to .doc of Win97/2000/XP
format for days ~ 400+ documents! into its butterfly format and crashes just
like with SO6.0 beta!!)
I clicked on the butterflied Icon of a file, and before the thermometer could
reach 1/3rd the way and the page was still blank, Windows displayed an error
box stating the program is being closed. Copied details; then on clicking the
CLOSE button, 2nd error message was displayed and I could only write down top
numbers. Pretty much same 0137 errors were the plague of SO6.0 beta; but it
used to have a 3rd error also with 'unknown' module and 0000:00000000*** info
also sometimes. The #s following 0137 were often same but often different as
well. I have a long list of these but not all copied in a file. I got tired of
it. hence the decision to uninstall SO6.0 Beta despite my fairly long patience
until last afternoon; the crashes were more and more frequent and even regular;
and after the life extension patch it got worse. I was almost going to MS
Office, but did not want to waste all my patience spent for months, and so I
decided to install OO1.0.0. Here we are still with this problem unfixed.
These errors happened with SO6.0 beta even worse when one tries to open an web
page document (created in SO6.0 beta as Star office document or a .doc
97/2000/xp format) on certain and not all documents.
I subsequently opened OO1.0.0 through START->Program->OPEN OFFICE WRITER and
the within its window Control+Open opened the window, selected my document and
it opened without crashing.
Now I clicked again on the icon through Control Panel->X drive->Folder-
>Documeent. It crashed as the OO1.0.0 was opening up with exact same 0137:
errors. So I tried the Star->Programs route and it opened without crashing.
I will try to copy paste here some of innumerable errors I had the persistence
to copy or I could copy! Hope it all goes well!! (I must have reformatted and
reinstalled Win95B some 6 times at least! in past 6 months or less)

12/29/2001 430am: Tried to send e-mail of a Star Office document; filled the
sending box; but it vanished and then msg came stating pgm made illegal
operation and closed; copied info here.

and the arrow vanished.

1/3/2002 315am to 355am: 3-4 freezing initally and then crashing errors when
opening Star Office document created tonight. C+A+Del each time and screen
became small central square; other places if mouse clicked on places where
icons were it will light up; 3 restarts did not change the sequence of events.

2nd error: Soffice caused invalid page fault in module SFX641MI.DLL at

I have Windows 95B with all the patches and updates appropriate installed and
the hard drives are 3.2 and 6 GB and are pretty much 1/3 only full each; the
machine is pretty fast and very stable for WINDOWS!!! I have had more crashes
in my past WorkStation Micron 550MHz machine with 256 MB SDRAM and NT4.0 and
far more faster Hard Drive. The maximum crashes I have had in my present
machine are all SO6.0 Beta and now OO 1.0.0; SO 5.2 was downloaded and
installed but I could never get it to open, it would not even show there is a
Suite or Suite's component, would show only the Player in Programs Bar, and did
not even uninstall properly; I had several 100s of pieces all over my machine
in unidentifiable folders and places, that I have still not fully been able to
remove after trying to Uninstall 6.0 Beta and 5.2. I have only spent about 18
hours or more yesterday. Things must be more organized together and kept
together. More choice must be given to allow or titrate whether Star
Office/Open office Suite should 'take over' all documents in the system or NOT!
Otherwise it IS deja vu again - like installing Microsoft Suites, IE, and other
programs. Such is not giving control to users.

For closures, I am not saving now any document in Star Office Formats; all are
going to be only in .doc or such! I spent only weeks to go through my machine
over and over to find and pick/peck all my documents and convert them all
before SO6.0 Beta could be removed. Too sad. Removal of the Quickstarter, Re-
downloading and reinstalling repeatedly (for download corruption possibilities,
opening program in so many different ways have all not helped with SO6.0 Beta
and now OO is also same it look like. Do we have to experience the same
scenario as with Microsoft that quality and pre-alpha items have to be released
for and hyped about excessively - simply for the sake of 'competing'
and 'showing we are doing something'?! Users are too much under life pressures
these days, only worseningly so that they ARE NOT taking loss of stability,
familiarity and trustworthiness, if something else is stated or made to believe
and then the carrot disappears to take the manifesto of a stick. This is N-O-T
good for this Star Office or Open Source Movement or from Marketing, Business
Development perspectives. The first dictum and Principle must be quality first
before propaganda and competition. Quality will and does speak itself out -
even this day and always. Going around and not fixing stability issues (which
result in tremendous time losses like previous MS Suites in 1990s) but adding
million features IS NOT THE RIGHT WAY. Star office is still in early stages, at
least by its real life performance and it is NOT too late to adjust priorities
on these issues.
Thank you for the opportunity to let me try my months with SO6.0 and a little
wink at 5.2 and now OO 1.0.0.
If you get time and motivation even after reading this l-o-n-g e-mail, you may
choose to reply. I am very persistent and even if I get furious I go back and
retry my efforts over and over. I hope I have contributed a tiny bit. My life
has shown I land in rarest of software and programming issues for the first
time. If we cab fix these, all of us would suffer less or not, although I might
have been first one to bear it on my shoulders.

Thanks for posting your problems. You've had a rough time with the OO software.

Have you attempted to use OO 1.0.1? Do you experience any problems with OO 1.0.1 if you have it installed?

Were you trying to open files that were on a shared drive?

You detailed message is appreciated. However, if you could limit your comments to instructions on how to duplicate the problems you experience and a brief summary of your thoughts, it would be much appreciated.
