Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 5500
Writer not useful for big documents
Last modified: 2003-09-08 16:56:16 UTC
Master documents and floating frames screwed up in such a (almost MS-Word compatible) way that big documents (such as books) cannot be written and maintained without extensive trouble, as decribed on http://www.cs.lth.se/~klas/star/off.html where the sources of solutions also are mentioned: Adobe FrameMaker and LaTeX!
Hi! Please commit 1 issue per problem. In a concise and precize step by step style. A benchmark article cannot be a good base for an issue report. Thank you

It is one issue, requiring two types of improvments. But OK, I'll clone it and resubmit next week. Please check with any professional writer to see that Writer is not useful (for books); even worse than MS-Word./Klas
Well, I am a professional writer; not technical, but non-fiction, books, and some really quite long magazine articles. And I would say that for pure text, OOo is mostly better than MS Word. that's why I use it. The only real -- and shameful - bug at the moment is the absence of a regex/wildcard function. But otherwise it will load and print long (60-80,000 word) documents much better than Word. Even the Navigator turns out useful then. This is not to say that FrameMaker isn't better; nor that OOo could not get much better at handling long technical documents. But it is already more useful than Word.
