Richard, try removing the following file inside the OO install directory: OpenOffice.org1.0/share/psprint/pspfontcache

This is a reproduceable scenario from 6017: I install OpenOffice 1.0 on RH 7.0. I create a new text document using the Charter font, and save the document. I then quit OpenOffice, restart it, and open the document. The text is no longer displayed in the Charter font, and in OpenOffice's font selector, "Charter" no longer displays in the Charter font. Some other font (which looks like a very simple default font) is used instead. Once again removing the pspfontcache file fixes the issue temporarily.
Lots of instructions in issue 4366. I think the workaround in 4366 should solve the issue. *** This issue has been marked as a duplicate of 4366 ***
As mentioned on the qa dev list on March 5th I will close all resolved duplicate issues. Please see this posting for details. First step in IssueZilla is unfortunately to set them to verified.
