Description issues@www 2001-03-11 04:30:47 UTC
Running install starts up fine with no errors. When I click on "Next" in the
first popup menu, my computer freezes completely (no Ctrl-Alt-Del, nothing...),
forcing me to power off to reboot. Thus unfortunately I don't get any error
messages. This happens with StarOffice 5.2 and all of the stable binaries of OOo.

relevant program versions?
RH 7.0, kernel 2.4.1, gcc 2.96, glibc 2.2.2, XF86 4.0.2

If I can provide any more info, please ask.

Thanks

Hi Olli,
with our standard SUSE 7.1 it's no problem with oo619.
Any ideas?

How do you wait after the X-Server freezes. I've heard that the X-Server needs
in some cases some time to render the fonts.

How _long_ do you wait ... of course

I was unable to install open office 625/619 on both Mandrake 8 & 8 beta 3.
Seems that this is the same problem, but recently, I got a successful install if
I start an X or XFree86 4.0.3 directly without calling even xinit (of course, I
send the setup in from another vt).

There was no frames but I can go thru the whole install process. During the
installation, sometimes popup message windows can't be displayed. But they
can't
finally be shown if I switch to another vt and then back.

After the installation, open office starts normally, but not for long. At least
it dies when I choose files in an open file dialog.

Hope this helps the troubleshoot.

I have the same problem. Affects OOo and SO5.2. I have Mandrake8. When
looking at what some users of help.cnet.com said, some believe that it has to do
with video cards. Well, for debug purposes, here's my sysinfo.

PIII 450, 256 MB RAM, Savage4 32 MB VRAM, XFree86 4.0.3 (i think), kernel 2.4.3.

I seem to have been booted from the user database, but since my
original posting of this issue, I have upgraded my video card. I too
had a Savage 4 card w/ 32MB memory. Since my upgrade (GeForce2 GTS) I
am able to setup and run OpenOffice.org 633 with no problems. I have
not upgraded any software since my last failed attempt with the
Savage4 card.

I don't know what this means, maybe a problem with the XFree86's
savage driver?

Or maybe the problem was fixed in 633. If anyone is interested, I
could try the previous versions which didn't work for me with the
Savage4 card.

Hope this helps.

I am also using the savage driver on my laptop and have the same
problem with build 638 - I have an ati card on my desktop with no
problems.

To get around it, I made a new XF86Config-4 that used the straight
"vesa" driver. Then I did the installations (both the root install
using the "-net" option and then installing the users). This worked fine.

So far, once installed, the actual software seems to run fine with the
savage driver - it seems to be isolated to the installation modules.

I spoke too soon - I was using swriter and it locked up (everything) -
so it's not just the installation components conflicting with the
savage card - its other stuff as well.
Comment 11 Unknown 2001-10-01 20:04:40 UTC
One last piece of information - I updated my XF86Config-4 file to include:

   Option "no_accel"

in the savage device section.

Now (so far) I am running ok....
