The line height of a bulleted list in a Word 97 .doc file is changed on import. 
See the attached screendump, showing the file opened in Word 97 and in OOo 1.9m122.

MRU->FME: The font size of thebullets in the left cell are too large (12 pt).
There is no character style assigned to the bullets, so the size should adapt to
the font used in the paragraph contents.

FME: The font size actually used for the bullets is 10pt (seen during
debugging), but the font is (Star|Open)Symbol, which has a greater size than TNR
10pt, thus the line size is increased.

How much bigger is the Starsymbol font height?

If, on import, the bullet font size would be selected in appropriate proportion
to the paragraph font size, you get smaller bullets but at least the layout of
the document will be preserved.

By the way, in OOo the standard bullet font size appears already to be smaller
than 10pt (try changing the list on the left into a bulleted list...)
