Description bfriedr 2005-06-02 11:07:27 UTC
Insert object Formula.
Create formular like

a^2 + b^2 = c^2

finalize
right mouse button -> catpion Eqn. 1 (or whatever)
NOW:
edit the formular and extend to

 a^2 + b^2 = c^2 same as c = sqrt{a^2 + b^2}

The frame size does not change; however the font size gets smaller and smaller.

Therfore copying formulas and editing etc. will not work.

Dr. Bernhard Friedrichs

TL->OD: Please take care of this one. Thanks!
Comment 3 thomas.lange 2005-06-03 11:27:03 UTC
TL->OD: It seems when a caption is inserted to a formula a different set of
options is needed than for all other objects (e.g. pictures or charts).

A workaround described by OD works like this:

Create a formula with only a single character and apply the caption to it.
Double click on the captions frame and in the tba page named "Type" of the
dialog choose "automatic" as setting for the width.
Now, outside the caption (and any other frame) enter the formula you like to have.

Select the formula in the caption and delete it. You can now cut-copy-paste the
formula you like to have from the outside to the inside of the caption.
Add a paragraph break after the formula.

Now the caption with the formula looks and works like it should.

I am sorry to say that the copy and paste solution is only meta-stable
(sometimes works, somtimes not).
Hence that it seems to be a size problem: caption frame versus formula size.
Long caption name versus short formlar leads to a magnification of the formula
font. That came out using your idea for a single character formular and
auto-frame-size... scientists can not really live with that.
Hope you get it fixed.
Thank you,

I checked with "2.0.2 German version WIN XP: [680m5(Build9011)]" and can
confirm the problem: a Caption Frame freezes the formula size, and shortening or
elongation of formula will enlarge or reduce front size in formula without
influence to formula size.

The bug has already been reported in Issue 12615, but I will leave this issue
open because Issue 12615 describes several different problems.

@bfriedr
Pls. specify your OS and Platform!
Comment 7 bfriedr 2006-08-19 08:52:06 UTC
I checked again with Linux /XP and OOo 2.0.3

Once again: object formular together with caption is UNUSABLE! No scientific
publications with OOo!!!!!

Hence that the error is obvious: there are two frames: fomular and caption; both
of them are re-sizing - that's naturally ok. Howver the the re-size is the same
like with images: the font size is changing - and that is WRONG!
I guess this is a fundamental problem (wrong design) and can not be solved for
OOo 2.x.x.

You can patch by using no caption and insert a reference below together with a
numbering; however for bigger publications this is not applicable.

Best regards,

Dr. Bernhard Friedrichs

->bfriedr : It may be very important for you but it's not a P1. Please have a
look at http://www.openoffice.org/scdocs/ddIssues_EnterModify.html#priority to
see which priority is appropriate.
