Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 4731
Import filter for WordPerfect documents
Last modified: 2007-02-03 20:04:47 UTC
Hi Stunned on trying to open Wordperfect 9 document with OpenOffice to find a list appear asking me to choose a filter. Can't this be automatic? Also, Why no Wordperfect filters? This is astonishing because there are many Wordperfect documents in the install folder, so Wordperfect must bre used by the program itself, yet it can't open WP files. Am I missing something? As a current Wordperfect user I would find it hard to justify switching to OpenOffice, even as a way to throw of the crushing domination of an inferior product in France (MS word).
JA->FT: reassigned as RFE...
As a start to this filter, I wonder if the code at http://www.sandelman.ottawa.on.ca/SSW/wp2x/wp2x.html is at all useful. It is old code, but may provide some ideas for the start of a WordPerfect filter, and enough motivation for others to join in.
I think you'll find WP2X is suitable only for the DOS-based WordPerfects, not the Windows/GUI WordPerfects (v6 and later).
It is my understanding that the underlying file format hasn't changed, just the types of data that is stored in the format. It is like having the XML parser without having the latest DTD. It is only a very early start, not something that will replace full file compatability with all the versions of WordPErfect. It is a tool last updated in 1995, started in 1989.
This website is always a useful place to start when looking for any file format documentation: http://www.wotsit.org/ http://www.wotsit.org/search.asp?page=3&s=text The Wordperfect file format is well documented, checkout the Corel Website. http://www.corel.com/ http://www.corel.com/partners_developers/ds/CO32SDK/docs/ff/A_FRNTFF.HTM The wordperfect file format has had only minor changes since Wordperfect 6. I am told KWord has very good WordPerfect support. Wordperfect support has been implemented in Abiword http://abisource.com the abiword bugzilla should have a fair bit of information, but as far as i know it is not as good as KWord yet. (grr, mumble, hate not being a priviliged user) Could someone please change: OS to All and for clarity and to make searching easier change summary from filters for Wordperfect 9.0 to [RFE] import export filters for WordPerfect 6/7/8/9 maybe change target milestone to not determined? maybe knock the priority down to P5 too? NB bugs #275 #1607 #5459 and #5956 and others are all queries (sort of) requesting WordPerfect support in OpenOffice. Although most of them have been made by users who did not seem to realise that OpenOffice does not include all the features of StarOffice. I realise the Sun Engineers have better things to do than add Wordperfect support to OpenOffice but i hope this bug will be left open incase there are outside contributors willing to work on this.
In case someone finds this bug, but didn't know about the site (like me until a moment ago), please see: http://wp.openoffice.org/ There is already initial work on a WordPerfect file filter. http://wp.openoffice.org/filter.html So far this is a separate (from OOo) utility, written in PERL, that will convert WP files to OOo's XML format.
I wrote to Corel to ask about file fomats, and they sent me to: http://www.corel.com/partners_developers/csp/wordperfect_developer.htm This does have a number of file format SDK's listed under "WordPerfect file format SDK". I wrote back asking for clarification on the license for the SDK in that we aren't interested in using specific software, but in getting documentation so that a third party program (I didn't give the name of the product) could interact with WordPerfect files.
This is an issue for me and my primary customer. They have LOTS of WordPerfect docs and need to convert, most likely to Word. When a beta is ready, please CC me and I'll test.
This is an important feature for all those of use who want to convert to OO but have WP files we need to convert.
Take a look at libwpd http://libwpd.sf.net It is most likely to form the basis of OpenOffices Wordperfect support.

Hi, we have someone who is working on a filter, and now he needs testfiles. Can you pls. attach some testfiles here in the issue? First 3-4 rather short and simple textfiles without frills would be interesting. Pls. always add information concerning your OS, WP-version and a screenshot (or PDF), so that the result of the filter can be checked. Thanks Rainer
Actually we have enough WP-documents! Rainer
I wanted to change component, because I think "wp" is more appropriate. But only subcomponent is "www" is availabel for "wp", no good idea, as I think. Rainer
From http://wp.openoffice.org/filter.html: "For the time being, development of libwpd, wpd2sxw, and writerfilter is being conducted externally on SourceForge <http://www.sourceforge.net>. This may change as work there matures and we start considering the possibility of proper integration with OpenOffice.org. For the time being, please direct all technical discussion (bug reports, compilation problems, offers of development assistance, etc.) to the libwpd-devel <http://sourceforge.net/mail/?group_id=62662> mailing list." And anyway: Subcomponent is not that important... I'd suggest closing invalid since development takes place outside OOo.
Re-assigned to BH
It is interesting that this has not been included in the "Q" release specifications. It is interesting that this is in the top 27 voted on issues and it doesn't seemed to be important to the OO development team. I even see a comment to close this issue. I see a lot of the features planned to be implemented in the next release of OO all have to do with improving the import features of Word Documents. With such a high voted on issue you would think that the OO developers would have a least pushed to include this feature in the next release of OO. I think this project should be supported by OO and that the developers should help the efforts of the WP team who are working hard to get a solution for this issue. I think this should be updated to be included in the "Q" release of OO.
Repeating: change summary from filters for Wordperfect 9.0 to import export filters for WordPerfect 6/7/8/9 I need it for WP 8.0. Currently, in WP I convert to RTF, when I want to import into OO.
changed summary -> Import filter for WordPerfect documents reassigned to wp added URL -> http://libwpd.sourceforge.net/ platform -> all os -> all type -> feature target milesone -> ?
