Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 4718
Help is not readable
Last modified: 2003-03-13 11:14:01 UTC
Installed 1.0 on RedHat 7.2 with KDE 2.2. Open help using the help menu. I cannot read it. Most help items in the hel ptext box don't have any text at all. Many have a heading, but there is a horizontal bar in dark blue from the font foot to halfway up the font, the font itself seems rendered in light gray. Some boxes have some graphics of a drawing pin or light bulb, but no text. One or two topics have some text, but it scrolls off the right hand side of the page. I'll try and attach a PNG screen dump. Cheers, James

UHE->HI: Please have a look at this problem. Thanks!
This bug happens with redhat 7.2 and OpenOffice641c or OpenOffice1.0, but does not happen on my other machine with OpenOffice1.0 and redhat 7.1. I think it is related to ´what is different between redhat 7.1 and 7.2?´
Please verify the attachment with your distribution.
As a matter of fact this problem arises in OOo due to a bug in RH 7.2/3. The fontserver claims to support the font Verdana, which is the first font searched for in the Help font list, but actually no Verdana fontfile is installed. Have a look at the fontserver configuration file: /etc/X11/fs/config search for the following font path: /usr/X11R6/lib/fonts/latin2/Type1 in this directory you will find an encodings.dir and fonts.dir. fonts.dir contains entries for "Verdan", but there is no Verdana font file installed. Workarounds (2): RH: in /etc/X11/fs/config comment out the line containing the font path: usr/X11R6/lib/fonts/latin2/Type1 and restart the font server: /etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs restart OOo: load the following file in an editor: <OOo_root_dir>/help/<language>/default.css search for the line: font-family: Verdana,Tahoma,Andale Sans UI,Arial,Helvetica,Albany, lucidux sans; Now put Helvetica (or any other ledgible good quality font without serifs) on top of the list, as Helvetica is a common available font on Linux.
The font name set was changed to avoid Verdana inside the *.css
