Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 45534
Impress Slide Show Crashes Video Card
Last modified: 2005-05-23 14:19:36 UTC
I am on a Gateway M675XL Laptop. Specs: Pentium 4 3.40ghz w/HT 1gb of ram ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 (driver version:6.14.10.0241) 128mb dedicated video ram 80gb 7200rpm drive I was creating a slide show in impress. I added many animations (several per slide). I would check how the slide looked by selecting all of the animations on a slide and pressing the play button on the custom animations submenu. At times I would also check the entire slideshow by pressing f5 or selecting "slide show" from various locations. After a while the video corrupts. This occurs either with viewing a single slide alone (after multiple times). Or by playing the entire slide show alone (after multiple times). Or by a combination of both (after multiple times). Once the corruption happens and I try to run the slide show the screen doesn't show the complete image. Some of the slide show elements will appear in front of the impress program but the screen will not completely change. When a single slide is played using the method I mentioned earlier the effect is similar just on a smaller scale (just in the edit window). After this all of my video card fuctions seem corrupted. After a computer restart this is corrected. I originally suspected that my video card was damaged. However, I can run full opengl and high end video games without similar problems. I still suspect my video card (compatibility?) or maybe it is a driver issue. I have the updated drivers (as of a couple of weeks ago). Thank you all for your concideration.
Reassigned. Is it possible to attach the file? Thanks in advance.
I had recreated the file twice. How do I attach one file without the pictures?
It would be dependent on photos. I don't think I can upload all of them. Can I. Regardless, I have tried this several times with a new file and it happens every time.
Can I upload the file plus the pictures? Additionally this happens with every new file that I create.
I am with a P4 3 Ghz, ATI Radeon 9600 and I found this bug too
Please upload the file and let us know if this is still and issue. Click on create attachment to upload the file. The pictures should be imbedded in the document. Marking as invalid until more information arrives.
Created attachment 24497 [details] this is a simple PowerPoint slide show that is displayed with strange diagonal lines
I also got those lines, but that is a separate issue. Please file a new issue for that. This issue is about crashing video cards.

I am uploading the file. I still think that this may be a video card compatibility problem. That thought is due to fact that my entire graphics settings become corrupted following this problem (ie. if I try to change the resolution or color quality it ask for a reboot - which it is set to do without reboot). This is the only problem that I have had that has caused this result. I think otherwise it would be widespread and that many more people would have already reported this problem. As is it seems to be isolated to a few people. I see that someone with a radeon 9600 (similar to mine) is having the same problem. Could it be that family of graphics cards?
I have been toying with this some more. I can't seem to replicate this problem like I did at once. I am now fairly certain that this only occurs when two instances of impress (and possibly any other openoffice application) is open. I also believe that it requires a large file (possibly greater than 2mg) with many animations. I haven't nailed down exactly how it happens. Previously I have had to work on a project constantly. I am going to try to upload a short video I took with my camera of the problem in action. I tried to get screen shots from my computer. However, at the time I would need a screen shot the video is doing strange things and all of get from a capture is black images. I cannot think of anyother way of showing the problem.
I was unable to upload that file. Sorry it has taken so long to respond. This is still an issue. I have been able to replicate the problem. Again I think it is a video card compatability. The file I have sent will not cause the problem unless another (and I believe larger) copy of impress is running.
This is the same as issue 46024. I am having the same problems (white box in the corner) and gets progresively worse (just as 46024).

I have tried this on 1.9.93 and confirm that the problem still occurs.
This has happend for me 3 times this weekend. Created new Impress document and created new slide with a photo. Test run it with "Slide in" annamation. Video card crashes. Once it reset the machine. AMD 3000 pc with 1gb ram. Raedeon 7000 video card running XP Home SP2.
@trbently -- Are you on a laptop or a regular computer. With a Radeon 9600 I would assume a normal computer but just checking. At what point does it crash for anyone. I watched it and didn't crash. Leaving as unconfirmed and chaging priority to P3.
I have a laptop (specs posted at the top). As I have said before in my first post it happens at different times. In a later post I noted that I felt that two copies of impress has to be running. I realize that myself and the other poster may be the only two having this problem. Read issue 42024. This poster explained it perfectly. It is exactly the problem I am having as well.
Sorry, I missed who the last was addressed to. Please disregard my statement.
In response to omment from peschtra I am on a desktop PC. When I run a presentation with a picture the screens WIPES very slowly even if the transition is FAST. After about 1/3 of the screen my computer reboots it self or the screen rests it self complaining of video driver problems.
We did some fixes for issue 46666. According to the developer this should also fix this bug. The fix is integrated in src680m95. Please have a look if this bug still occures in src680m95.
Marking as dup. Please post all further comments to 45196. *** This issue has been marked as a duplicate of 45196 ***
