Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 45080
FEATURE Request: Open templates fron directly from web sources
Last modified: 2019-10-08 18:48:53 UTC
This feature request is for a redesign of http://ooextras.sourceforge.net/ and to make it's look and feel more project based. As a example of project based I suggest lokking at http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/templates/default.aspx as a good model. Templates should be able to be voted on to keep the good ones and remove the rest. A see a lot of business people leary of testing OOo. A really good templates and clipart site can really make the differance. One of the earier feature requests touched on this (see 3146 Feature Request: Project based templates). The one new feature I would like to see keyed into this redesign is the ability to access these templates via 'File - New - Templates & Documents'. As a start put shortcut access to http://ooextras.sourceforge.net/ on the Help - Support menu and in the 'Templates & Documents' dialog. I see in the future bring able to download one or more templates, template groups from http://ooextras.sourceforge.net/ and 'Templates & Documents' would do all the work automatically creating local groups and menus for them. File - Autopilot already has this functionally in 'Install New Dictionaries' and 'Install Fonts from the Web.' Can a Install New Clipart / Templates be that far away?
Thanks John, for the info. Unfortunately, we cannot change ooextras. I do not have any control over the site. If you want, you can take your suggestion to the webmaster there. You can also stick around and help us redesign our Samples and Template section. As it stands currently, this issue will need to be set to WONTFIX, and a new one created for modifying the Samples and Templates section on Documentation.
defect -> enhancement
I would like to see a new file type for OOo. It's purpose would be to allow OOo to download web based templates that included all the information needed by 'Templates and Documents' to install one or more templates/clipart packs with no or little feedback from the user. Suggest a extension that showed a (O)O0 (I)nternet based (T)emplate, perhaps .OIT (OOo Internet Template). Such a template group would include one or more templates and clipart and the full instructions to "Documents & Templates" as far as installation specs which the user could accept as is or change on the fly. A good example of such would be the desisting Flowchart template an clipart set. Download the .OIT and open it directly into OOo. With limited input from the user it could be downloaded to the proper places in the users OOo install and added to 'Templates & Documents'. Could be a great way for third party template builders to share their work. It could add a link in 'Templates & Documents' to access templates from the main OOo support page and other sites. Two other suggested places would be [File]-[Wizards]-[Install templates from the web], and [Help]-[Support]-[Templates & Documents]. If you look at http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/templates/default.aspx you will see most of the work is from the same third party company. Perhaps companies creating third party templates for OOo (for a donation fee???) could post freeware templates as a way to support the OOo project and drive awareness of OOo.
