Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 43116
OOo differs from Excel in handling of numbers in text fields
Last modified: 2005-02-21 09:31:45 UTC
In an .xls spreadsheet created by excel 95/97 a vendor has sent us a price list. He has unfortunately set all cells to text format. Excel (all versions) recognises the content as numeric (despite warning text to the contrary) and 'correctly/intuitively' allows a formula referencing two such cells to calculate the correct value. OOo 1.1.4 and 1.1.9.65 both fail to calculate, showing a result of 0, until the cell types are chnaged to currency. It doesn't even work if the cell is changed to numeric. F2 in Excel shows the number eg: 35.00 whereas in OOo it appears as '35.00.

I see the problem, but the solution is not easy: I am afraid there are to many cases how those "text containing numbers" fields can be handled. May be an input filter with checkbox "change text fields only containing number" could be a solution? Change to "Enhancement".
I do not see that as a defect, OOo behaviour is correct.
