Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 42690
A new kind of distribution of OOo for Windows - deb ? apt-get ? synaptic ? or rpm ?
Last modified: 2013-02-07 22:38:37 UTC
Hello, First, I want to say that I'm a GNU/Linux Debian user so the feature I'm sending is very inspired from GNU/Linux operating system. Maybe you know the famous 'apt-get' command from Debian. Synaptic is a front-end for this command. Most of Linux distros use a simular command (yum for Fedora, urpmi for Mandrake...). Here is the following fearures : - easy install of a program - easy update of a program - easy to solve problem of dependencies between packages I think OOo should make a similar tool for Windows... Why ? Because people aren't geek... [educational and philosophical reason] If they have an easy way (graphical user interface) for installing many open software they will be urge to use them... instead of proprietary softwares. Because people aren't geek... (2) [security reason] Let's imagine a major bug in the next OOo... (as the jpg problem with MS apps) Do you really think that people will update their software... I don't think so... (or I think they will do it very lately... unfortunately too late...) ? Imagine the disaster if the security problem is on a shared library (shared by many opensource softwares) !!! What is the solution ? Major opensource developers (OOo, Mozilla, GIMP,...) should make such a program and should ONLY send binaries for Windows as a package... not a standalone exe Who can help them ? Maybe first they should have a look at RPM specifications and DEB specifications (DEB is maybe a better way as it can pre-configure a package) Maybe they should also work with open installers such as NSIS (or others) So we could have something similar to Fink for MacOS X... and when someone is looking for an Office Suite he will run "Synaptic for Windows" (just an exemple of name) and look for Office... and found OpenOffice. I hope you understand my poor english and see how it can be important for OpenOffice.org and other opensource apps 1) For security reason 2) For philosophy reason (only open softwares !) 3) for educational purpose (so Windows users will understand more easily how software are installed on Linux) Regards Sébastien Celles
moving to component installation where installation, update, ... is handled.
reassigned
I want to add that what is needed is : dpkg (off-line package installation/uninstallation) dpkg -i mypackage.deb for installation dpkg-reconfigure for configure a package apt apt-get install mypackage (for on-line installation) synaptic or any self made GUI some developers libs are needed such as libdb2-dev : database from Berkeley libbz2-dev : bz2 compression maybe other libs are needed but I don't know... because they are probably ever installed on my Debian OS. I really think that using an existing idea is a good solution as it works on Debian for years... Packages are a good way to update operating system... Regards

This issue still apply with OOo 3.0
We still have rpm and deb packages. We don't support automatic updates apt-get and synaptic. But I think that is offered by the Linux distributions with their OOo versions. So we should close the issue.
No ! I'm not talking about Linux... but about Windows ! There's no repositery for open-source project for Windows to get binaries. I think it could be a usefull project to make something that could help to spread open source project for windows !
