I downloaded the full component installation and the installation was fine...I
chose the SUn JDK 1.4.0 for java and javascript

Trying to run the soffice or the swriter scripts only produced a Openoffice
startup screen that disappeared with the message Aborted in the console window.

Please help.

Actually there was an error about X Library not support en_HK. The
Redhat allowance for English/HK broke it here.

Changing LANG=en_HK to LANG=en_US fixed it.
