Description grsingleton 2005-02-03 20:37:51 UTC
Attempting to activate java causes OOo to crash with the following error:

javaldx: Could not find a Java Runtime Environment!
/opt/openoffice.org1.9.74/program/soffice.bin: symbol lookup error:
/usr/lib/libgnomevfs-2.so.0: undefined symbol: xmlTextReaderConstName

Please be a little more detailed in your description? What means activating?
What are you doing?
Comment 3 grsingleton 2005-02-03 23:32:52 UTC
Closing the issue when asking for more information is not very good. Please
investigate more thoroughly.

Activate: see http://www.wordreference.com/definition/activate for a definition
as we seem to have a problem communicating.

As to how: Tools > Options > OpenOffice.org > Java. Click add and crash.

The error is self-explanatory. If you need assistance please ask and I will be
glad to explain.

Comment 5 andrew 2005-02-04 02:32:43 UTC
I have no issues on my system, also fedora core 3. I assume that activate is the
same as enable or telling OOo that Java exists.

First, I went to the Java setup. Of course, I already had Java listed there. I
assume, therfore, that it is "Activated" or "Enabled". So, I turned it off!
Then, I turned it on again. I can make two guesses.

Guess 1: Which version of java do you have? I am using jdk1.5.0_01. I think that
I read that you must use 1.5 so I installed 1.5 BEFORE I installed the 74
development build. I do not remember where I read this and I could be very very
wrong.

Guess 2: The JDK 1.5. is in my path...

I hope that this helps...

Side note: Java was already there, I did nothing special to cause it to appear
there. Java is in my path already, however...

Mr. Singleton, if you would like me to perform any specific tests on my
computer, let me know. For you, I am more than happy to do this for you :-)

Change summary to emphasize what the error says.
Comment 7 Olaf Felka 2005-02-04 10:05:10 UTC
@ grsingleton: You are right. This would be a communication problem. But I don't
think that it is my problem:
- you're writing "Attempting to activate..." That means setting the checkbox in
Java section in tools options amd/or to choose an installed one by selecting it
with radiobutton and not to add a runtime environment
- you're writing that I have closed the issue. That's not true. I've channged
the resolution to 'worksforme' and added the key word 'needmoreinfo'. That's
correct if it works for me and if I need more info.
- nitpicking: this is not a 'component: installation' problem. Ok, without
installation you don't have problems with the office :-). Problems in the
options dialog belong to the framework component.
I know that you are high motivated supporter of OOo. So that's why I hope that I
get a more detailed and valid issue description
