Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 4194
Problem with style in MSWord 97/2000 saving format
Last modified: 2003-09-08 16:56:16 UTC
I'm evaluating migration from MS Office to OpenOffice in a large company (1500 users) in France. Unfortunately, our correspondants will remain in MS Office, so we have to save our documents in the MS Office format by default. The problem is: We are using corporate documents, with outline numbering style. If I open an existing MSWord document with OO, the look is OK and the numbering is working (I can add a new line ans selest the heading2 style and I will get a 1.1 blabla numbering). If I save the change in OO 641 native format, and re-open it in OO to add a new numbered line, it works fine (the numbering format is respected). If I save the change in Word97/2000 format, and re-open it in 00 to add a new numbered line, the numbering doesn't work anymore. Whatever heading level I select I get an incoherent numbering (1.2.1 even if I select heading 2 which should give me 1.3). I don't know where it comes from but it is reproductible. And a more strange thing is : if you open with MSWord the document saved in Word97/2000 format with numbering not working anymore and apply a numbering change it is working again!!! Seems that only OO is not able to use style information about numbering saved in the document. This problem is preventing us to deploy which is too bad...
Reassigned to Michael.
I was not able to reproduce this problem with my test documents. So please attach your sample document to this issue so that we can see here what's going wrong. Thank you very much!

There seems to be something wrong in importing/exporting numbering styles to/from Word format. Could you please attach the original Word document (which you used BEFORE you changed it with OpenOffice) and the .sxw file you mentioned above (or send them directly to my account (mru@openoffice.org). This should give us a bit advice. For workaround with your numbering problem: when you assign a Heading style to a paragraph and the wrong numbering level is show, you can adjust it by pressing the Tab or Shift-Tab key when the cursor is placed right after the number.
Bold text is not formatted as bold when saving as Win2000 doc format
Ah, now I see, where the Problem is. This is not an real Outline numbering. The Headlines are numbered because a numbering style has been assigned to the Heading1/2/3 Styles. The numbering is not connected to the heading styles (which is done via "Tools/Outline Numbering"). So if you want to lift your new Heading to Level 3 (e.g. 1.2.1) you have to press the Tab key once you have inserted it.
Closed, because not a bug. The Outline Levels have not been assigned to the Headings correctly.
