Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 41846
UI Enhancement for formatting Plain Horizontal Line
Last modified: 2013-02-07 22:38:48 UTC
In OOo 1.1 writer/HTML editor, a user clicks Insert -> Horizontal ruler -> Plain -> OK to insert a plain horizontal ruler in the document. To change it's color, line style, width etc a user needs to click Format -> Paragraph -> Borders and then select the relevant options from there. This approach assumes that - Plain Horizontal Line = Paragraph Border (??!!) This kind of assumption is really confusing for a new user. Here are few suggestions to improve it - (1) A Horizontal Line = Horizontal Line, whether it is a plain or graphical. Don't assume Plain Horizontal Line = Paragraph Border [You will do a lot of favor to New users :-) ] (2) A Plain Horizontal Line should be selectable with left mouse click, as is the case with graphical line. (3) On right clicking a plain horizontal line, a context menu should open and from there a user should be able to select the desired options. It *IS* the approach, which HTML editor front page uses. Can OOo writer/HTML Editor users have the same User Interface?
Most of the issues reported at OOo issue tracker are classified as OOo “featuresâ€. It is difficult to understand why OOo team creates such weird “featuresâ€, which look bugs to most of the users, at first sight. Can not a serious look at the user requests and a brief usability analysis eliminate most of these “features†even before they created? Features should be created while keeping end users in mind and not necessarily for programming convenience. OpenOffice.org is a “hidden treasureâ€, where a user needs to dig deep, in order to accomplish even simple tasks. Good Luck
Hi there, Software developers who developed this “feature†-> Plain Horizontal Line = Paragraph Border, needs a place for themselves in INNOVATORS Heaven !! An Obliged OpenOffice.org User :-)
Maybe a horizontal line inserted as a drawing object should be offered here.
