Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 4174
Close exits application
Last modified: 2003-09-08 16:56:16 UTC
One using close application closes rather than just the current open document.. Found this odd after using MS for WordProcessing..
(comment by Andrew Ginty, see issue #4175) Sorry my last comment wasn't clear... Using File > Close not only closes the open document but exits the OpenOffice application.. Surely exiting the application should happen with File > Exit and the app should remain open with no documents...
Hi, I suggest to change this to a feature request, because it is not a defect in the sense of a programming error (annoying nonetheless), to change the Component to "framework", and to mark #4175 as duplicate. With MS Office apps, on File->Close", the application window stays on the screen, containing a grey (blank) document area. This is convenient if your work involves editing documents after each other: you close a document, then use the File->open in the menu bar of the app window (which is still in the same place and on top) to open the next one. With OpenOffice.org, the app window also closes on File->Close, so you have the additional actions opening one again (e.g. Start Menu- >OpenOffice.org->Write) before you can access File->Open again. A difference between MS Office and OpenOffice.org is that in the first, a window may contain multiple documents, of which only one (if any) is visible. In OpenOffice.org, each document is contained in its own window, so there is some logic in closing the window along with the document. But (the integrated desktop having gone) it means an annoying inconvenience. BTW, I wonder if there is actually any difference in the implementation of File->Close and File->Exit? A solution might be to have the closing app window (on File->Close) start a new app window to take its place. On File->Exit it would simply close the document and the window. Simon Brouwer.
Using CTRL+F4 has the same result. I can't think of any other Windows application that is closed using CTRL+F4. I assume CTRL+F4 is a shortcut for File->Close, though it isn't listed on the right of the menu (like e.g. CTRL+O for File->Open).
