Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 4120
OpenOffice freezes for a long time, when trying to display pictures from attached documents
Last modified: 2003-09-08 16:56:16 UTC
1. I made picture with MS Paint, 2. copied from paint, 3. pasted to text document, 4. saved document, 5. clicked on page preview OpenOffice crashed - it stoped responding. 6. I opened same document OpenOffice crashed - it stoped responding. dumb solution: 7. i renamed documet to zip, 8. opened zip and deleted picture catalog 6. I opened same document. Instead of picture - message, something like "Picture openning failed".

I have problems with pasted pictures (not only from MS Paint) too - OpenOffice uses 99% CPU very long time (about 10-20 minutes on Athlon 700 in Win2k with build 642 and about 2 minutes on Celeron-300 in Linux with buils 641C) I noticed if OpenOffice document contains files with .svm extension in Pictures catalog, then this bug exist, but if there are only .png files - then all is ok. I attached another file, that contains both - .svm and .png pictures in Pictures catalog. This document is created with OpenOffice, I make copy-paste from MS Word document (.doc) In this document are no problems with first picture, but there are problems with next pictures. Tested with Debian GNU/Linux and Win2k (with buids 641C and 642)
Created attachment 1406 [details] OpenWriter Document with 'good' and 'bad' pictures
I think this bug must be fixed before OpenOffice 1.0 will out.
this is ok in my StarOffice 6.0 windows build and in my OpenOffice.org 641d linux build. I assume that his has fixed in the meantime. please verify with the latest 641d build, 642 is intended to be a developer build and is quite old now. resetting keyword, feel free to readd if you're able to reproduce with 641d.
Now this bug exist only with attached documents - when I open one of this documents OpenOffice freezes (uses 99%) CPU for about one minute (on linux with 400 Mhz CPU - about 1,5 minutes) I verified with OpenOffice 1.0 on Win2k and latest debs (2002/04/23) on Debian GNU/Linux. But if if you paste some pictures from Paint all is OK. Now Vytis can work, but 99% CPU for one minute is not good...
Reassigned to Hasan.
Verified with OpenOffice1.0
hi@openoffice.org, what does it mean "Works for me" ? Have you tried to open both documents attached to this bug and have you seen all pictures (in one document there are 3 pictures, you must scroll up and down to see) and doesn't OpenOffice freeze for some time for you? In my opinion OO shouldn't freeze at all, independently from the documents opened or objects displayed.
Sorry but I see only one graphic on the first page, a database-net. The graphics on page 2 and 3 seems to be damaged because the graphics look like an empty frame. This could be the reason, why I have to wait up to 5 sec. when I select each graphic on page 2 and 3. The bug.sxw has the same behavior OO1.0 definitely doesn't freeze when I scroll your document up and down. I also build such document to compare the behavior and did not have any problems like your description. -> Works for me. May you have any more hints like which OS you use or what should I see on page 2 and 3.
I have tried to reproduce this issue on 1.0.0 version. I cut some piece of picture with IrfanView (image review program) and paste to sxw document. then saved, closed, reopened. Everything fine. But then i did the same with MSPaint, OO stoped responding for 2 minutes. Can be this problem with bitmaps (BMP)?
it seems, this issue is fixed on 1.0.1
