Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 41120
UI suggestion to Change Zoom Box Location
Last modified: 2005-03-21 03:57:44 UTC
In OOo 1.1.0 Writer, Calc etc. Zoom Box is situated on the bottom side of the window and is not a drop down box. How about placing it on the upper Tool bars like Function Tool bar to make it more visible and converting it into a drop down box. Similar layout is used in most of the applications (like Adobe's reader).
this icon will beplacedt in the toolbar in OOo2.0 so i close this issue as WFM.

OOo 2.0 beta screen shots still show zoom box at the existing location. If you are not sure what this issue is all about, then please have a look at the default user interface of adobe's reader or word. You will notice that zoom box is on upper tool bar, at the right hand side. It is the interface most of the users are familiar with and is used in most of the word processors, spreadsheets, presentation softwares etc.
SBA: In OOo 1.9.84in the Word Processor, the Zoom icon is in the top toolbar, 2nd from right. At the bottom of the window is the so-called "Status Bar". This has some grey boxes telling actual settings, i.e. current page style, The zoom factor, the input mode (inert/overwrite) and more. These can be used by double-click or right-click to adjust several settings, too. Set to Worksforme.
SBA: Note: The icon order can NEVER (in this case this means: never) serve all users experiences, habits, guts, feelings, moods and expectations at once while at the same time be as MUCH as possible a [XYZ] Office clone (in order to serve the "I've learnt once, that should do for life" folks) AND as LITTLE as possible a [XYZ] Office clone (i.e. for the "Microsoft allergics") at the same time. This is adressed by the fact that toolbars can easily be adjusted to one's favorite icon order: Click the small black arrow on the toolbars side, choose "customize toolbars" and then you can rearrange all icons at will. Closed.
This issue is about *All* components of OOo and not particularly that of writer's. You my wish to have a look at koffice ( http://www.koffice.org/ ) and Gnome office ( http://www.gnome.org/gnome-office/ ) where almost all components proudly sport it. Ordering of icons is immaterial. What is important is location (upper right hand side, where it is more visible) and icon behavior (Drop down box, which is easier). Cloning has not been requested. only reproduction of easy to use UI has been requested. If a feature is good, then it should be tried (like. Firefox Multi tabbed UI). Important thing is feature (Provided it is not patented) and not mimicking a particular company or it's products. Good luck
