Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 4080
OpenOffice crashes and fails to save the file in Windows 98/2000 and Mandrake Linux 8.2
Last modified: 2003-09-08 16:56:16 UTC
I created a OpenOffice document for a project I was working on and the file that I created crashes OpenOffice on Mandrake Linux 8.2 runnning GNOME, Windows 2000, and Windows 98. Windows bug: This bug affects the versions of StarOffice that I tested which were 842 and 841d. When the file that created is opened and then Saved as a MSWord 97/2000/XP Document. OpenOffice crashes with one bar left on the status bar at the bottom of the window. OpenOffice then stalls and does not continue. The temp file created for the conversion in the directory is not renamed and it contains half of the data of MSWord Document Conversion process. This is replicated evertime I try and do the Conversion Process. This process on Windows 2000 takes up 100% of the CPU usage. The document is able to be exported to MS Word 95 using StarOffice 841d but StarOffice 842 fails during the Conversion with the same problem as the Ms Word 98/2000/XP Export. Also sometime when I try and save the file as a standard OpenOffice format file, the same situation will occur and OpenOffice will crash, this will force me to restart and OpenOffice then will be able to save the file. This bug is replicateable, (I caused it 7 times) but the steps to which are unknown. This was caused on the P4 Computer listed below. The Computers I tested this on is a: P4 - 1.4 GHz, 256 MB RAM, 6.39 Gigs Free on C:, Ultra160 SCSI HDD, Running Windows 2000 fully updated using WindowsUpdate.com IBM Thinkpad T20 Laptop - P3 - 700 MHz, 128 MB RAM, 2 Gigs Free on C:, 1.3 Gigs Free on D:, Running Windows 98 fully updated using WindowsUpdate.com Linux Bug: This bug affects version 842. When I opened the same document which is StarOffice Document Format on Mandrake Linux 8.2 running GNOME, OpenOffice throws itself into an infinite loop and does not redraw itself correctly on the XTerminal. I watched the CPU processes using CPU/MEM Usage Applet 1.4.0.5 from the Free Software Foundation bu Radek Doulik. I can then watch it use 100% of my processor usage most of which is OpenOffice talking to the Kernel and roughly 30% is tasks that do not require the kernel. I then am able to Alt-Tab to a GNOME console if it is already open and kill the process, or if I did not open previously, I can Ctrl+Alt+F1 out of the XTerminal, and log in on another virtual terminal and kill the Process. This bug happens everytime I open it so it is easily replicateable. The Computer I tested this on: IBM Thinkpad T20 - 700 MHz, 512 MB RAM, 1.8 gigs free on /usr where OpenOffice is installed, 4 gigs free on /, and 2.4 gigs free on /home. This occurs when openoffice is the only open process, and when there are other applications opened. OpenOffice is correctly installed, and the user priveliges on the file are correctly given to read and write the file. If you would like the file because I cannot attach it to the bug report it is located on the web at: http://users.rcn.com/viper/egokid/mandlebrot/canoe.sxw - The OpenOffice file that causes the problems http://users.rcn.com/viper/egokid/mandlebrot/canoe.tmp - The Temp file, renamed and that is left during the process of the conversion it is 1.50 kb large.

Josh, thanks for posting this issue. OOo 1.0.1 does not crash when saving your file to OOo format or Word 97/2000/XP format. Feel free to reopen this issue if the problem still exists for you. Thank you for using and supporting OOo.
As mentioned on the qa dev list on March 5th I will close all resolved <wontfix/duplicate/worksforme/invalid> issues. Please see this posting for details. First step in IssueZilla is unfortunately to set them to verified.
