Description jlrowe 2005-01-05 13:16:42 UTC
1. Start OOm65, new text doc.
2. In Firefox 1.0, highlight and copy text from:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/01/03/x-ray_pilot_update/
beginning at the phrase "Heathrow x-ray weapons scanner, just say no" and
continuing to the end of the article text ending at the phrase "cede security to
automated systems.".
3. Writer crashes and OO exits.
Note: this is not the only page I have seen this with., nor the first time I
have reported it. The others however, were reported with the auto reporting
tool. It did NOT come up this time and some others.
4. 100% repeatable.
Comment 1 michael.ruess 2005-01-05 15:29:06 UTC
Hm, I tried with Netscape / Mozilla (do not have FireFox on my system) and
didn't have the problem. I think, this problem is duplicate to issue 38569. It
states, that OO crashes when inserting clipboard content as "Formatted text (RTF)".
JLROWE, could you please check, if Firefox provides RTF format for CLipboard?
Just just have to copy the content from the site you mentined and described and
in Writer go to "Edit.Paste special" dialog. If there's RTF listed, this is a
duplicate to issue 38569.
thanks a lot!
Comment 2 jlrowe 2005-01-05 22:33:10 UTC
OK.
Tried the same exact thing with the same software set on my home PC, which is
WinXP Home.
Same results.

Tried the 'Paste Special' option.
It gives:
1. HTML format (this also crashes)
2. HTML format without comments ( this also crashes)
3. Unformatted Text (this does NOT crash)

It does not offer RTF as an option.

Finally, you don't have Firefox, but it is an easy install, and coexists nicely
with Mozilla, Netscape, IE, etc. Get it and try it. You should get the same results.

Unable to replicate the issue. I tried with Firefox 1.0
Comment 4 michael.ruess 2005-01-06 09:56:17 UTC
Even with Firefox I am not able to get a crash in OO Writer.

MRU->ES: Do you know anything about the fact, that pasting certain HTML content
from clipboard might crash a 680 build?
Comment 5 jlrowe 2005-01-06 21:50:36 UTC
I also had it happen again today on my workpc, and then tested the same on my
home pc. Win2k and WinXP home respectively.
The web site this time was:
http://www.thisislondon.com/til/jsp/modules/Article/print.jsp?itemId=15804752
actually linked from the print button on:
http://www.thisislondon.com/news/articles/15804752?source=Evening%20Standard

1. Select all (ctrl-a) Copy, paste to OO writer.
2. Crash.

I took a jpg of the crash msg this time and will attach.

MRU->pierduluberon: the crash when pasting from Wordpad is the mentioned issue
38569 and a bit different from this problem here.
Comment 11 jlrowe 2005-01-07 18:49:52 UTC
Today, in addition to the HTML paste problems, I attempted a paste from a PDF
doc previously generated from OOm65 that also originated from an HTML page on
the web.

The paste attempts an RTF paste, and will crash with a single word being
highlighted and pasted.

Probably does not matter what word, but the one I used was 'burgeoning' near the
beginning. PDF will be attached after this post.

Please read MRU's last comments.
It's a duplicate.

Concerning the crash on HTML paste, please try to find out what makes it
reproducible on your systems (The way you select, the braowser you use, the
programs you run in the background...)

Untill then I'll close the issue.
Feel free to reopen it when you'll have more information.

OK. Here is what I did.
1. Re-installed Firefox with zero extensions.
2. Killed every running app, resident program, service, etc. that I could do.
Really an impossible working condition for me :-)
3. Opened the web page in question.
4. Copied to the clipboard as noted.
5. Pasted.
6. Crashed exactly as before, but with a recovery box this time. Error message
apparently sent from the crash msg system OK.

Here is a list of running apps obtained via pslist.exe

I tried the copy and paste from pdf files and reproduced your crash.
1. opened pdf file.
2. ctrl-a to select all.
3. open new text doc.
4. ctrl-v to paste. Starts import then crashes using OOm69 running winXP Home.
Used Adobe acrobat 7.0 to open pdfs.
Tried different pdf files but crashes with all when trying to paste.

RE: comments from dnsloat Thu Jan 13 05:18:01 -0800 2005
Pasting from a PDF apparently pastes as RTF, which technically is a different
bug, though I wonder if it is not the same root cause somewhere in the system.

My bug reported here is HTML paste.

If you go to Edit, Paste Special, I think the top item listed is the default for
paste. To see what causes the crash, try them all.

For me, pasting from Firefox to OO is listed as HTML format at the top of the
list. And it does crash way to often.
Comment 18 jlrowe 2005-01-17 03:30:27 UTC
Verified that this procedure crashes m69, just as it did with m65.

Comment 19 thackert 2005-01-30 15:29:46 UTC
I have tried to follow your steps (means: I copied all the mentioned URLs in a
new Writer text document), but it does not crash with OOo-1.9.74-de. I have
copied from Firefox 1.0 unter SuSE 9.1, so I cannot confirm your crash ... :(
Could you also try a newer version of OOo and see, if this crash occurs there
too, please?

Version: OO 1.9.71.1
Component: Writer
OS: Windows Server 2003, Windows 2000 SP4

We tried to replicate the bug for Firefox 1.0 on a Windows 2000 system SP4 and
Windows Server 2003 but the Open Office 1.9.71.1 did not crash. The content
from the webpage:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/01/03/x-ray_pilot_update/
Was copied exactly as it should be but the image got corrupted.

We tried to replicate the bug by using different web browsers like Internet
Explorer 6.0 and Opera 7.54.

Case A:

1.	Start OO 1.9.71.1, new text document.

2.	Open webpage:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/01/03/x-ray_pilot_update/
in the Internet Explorer 6.0

3.	Copy the contents to Open Office writer 1.9.71.1

4.	After pasting the contents first page is blank.

5.	Contents appear only on the second page, but not the entire contents,
only up to what could fit into the page.

6.	Rest of the contents is lost.

Case B:

1.	Start OO 1.9.71.1, new text document

2.	Open the webpage:
        http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/01/03/x-ray_pilot_update/
        in Opera 7.54

3.	Copy the contents to Open Office writer 1.9.71.1

4.	The entire text was copied as is from the web page except the images

ES->jlrowe: (same old question) can you still reproduce it (src680m77)?
We have fixed some things for the clipboard in this version, maybe...?
Please also, try again for testing to reduce the number of the background
running process on your machine. Though I have no idea what they are, they don't
look like "normal" Windows process and may conflict with OOo:

CSRSS
nhksrv
EventAgt
DLT
hidserv
Iap
inetinfo
vstskmgr
Win32sl
mspmspsv
SoftMon
prpcui
DadApp
EM_EXEC -> it's MacroMagic, right? A nice tool, but I already experienced bad
things with other programs (incl. OOo) when it's active...
Directcd
NTVDM

So please, have a look again.
Comment 22 jlrowe 2005-02-09 01:54:20 UTC
I think I have a breakthrough. Due to another bug in part.
First, I am currently not getting the crash on the Win2k machine.
But I am on the XPHome machine.
When I have the crash, the new bug causes my setting for User Defined Template
to be lost, and I get the default.

Behold: I do not get the crash with the default. But I do with the User Defined
Template, which is nothing more that the default with wider margins.

I have (will) attached the template from the XP machine in the next post.
I do believe that the Win2k and XP machine have the same template. However, I
normally have just created them on the fly.

Comment 24 jlrowe 2005-02-09 02:04:55 UTC
Update.
Forgot to mention that the previouis post regarded m74 with both machines.

Had not looked for a day or two and did not know anything newer existed.
However, I think that may be immaterial if the template is related.

Question: is the a source for newer builds other than indicated on the OO
download page?
Comment 25 erzielin 2005-02-13 21:52:21 UTC
Confirmed the behavior outlined below with the Writer file in attachment #22352 [details].
When opening up a default blank document in writer the issue does not occur.

Steps to duplicate the problem:
1. Start 680m77 Writer
2. Open the template file from attachment #22352 [details] (writer.ott).
3. Open Firefox 1.0
4. In Firefox 1.0, highlight and copy text from:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/01/03/x-ray_pilot_update/
beginning at the phrase "Heathrow x-ray weapons scanner, just say no" and
continuing to the end of the article text ending at the phrase "cede security to
automated systems."
5. Switch back to Writer and click Paste..Special.
6. Select HTML Format (the first choice).
7. Click CTRL+V to paste.
8. Writer crashes with an error from C++ indicating abnormal program termination.

Note: The Writer application also crashes if HTML Format without Comments is
selected in step #6, but instead of a C++ error, an OpenOffice.Org dialog box
pops up saying that the program terminated unexpectedly.

I sent a Crash report in referencing this issue # in the description.

I faced the same problem many times.
Using Firefox 1.0 and trying to "copy & past" with OOo1.9.79 it crashes every time.
This link is an example: http://www.unhchr.ch/html/menu3/b/d_minori.htm.

OD->MAV: Please take over as discussed.
Method <OStorage::hasByName(..)> throws exception lang::DisposedException, which
causes the crash.

The problem should be already fixed in the m81 milestone. I will check it when
the build is ready.
To reproduce the problem it is enough to copy the content from the URL to any
writer document ( actually it should not be application dependent ) opened from
template.

No crash in m81.
Although there are still some things that might look like misbihaviours:
- office tries to download the picture for 2 minutes if there is no proxy,
during this time it is unusable ( as far as I know this problem is already fixed
but is still not integrated into master );
- writer tries to insert two objects, this problem was mentioned by OD already (
actually there are two objects marked by <script> and <noscript> tags, I am not
sure whether they are handled correctly, but this is something that html guru
from writer team shoud clarify ).

Reopening to send the issue back.
