Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 39839
paste cells when all cells are selected freezes Calc
Last modified: 2013-08-07 15:12:27 UTC
To reproduce: - open Calc and enter some data into some cells - select a number of cells and copy to clipboard - go to the next sheet, select all cells and paste clipboard -> Calc will freeze (I killed the process, when it was using 1.5GB Ram) this has been reported fro OOo 1.1.3 (Windows) and was varified for 1.1.4 (Windows). I'd expect this behaviour on other platforms too. But as I didn't verify, I set set Platform to WinXP only.
Hi, this is a double to Issue 21243 and it doesn't hang. It tries to paste your data into all selected cells, in this case 65536 Rows x 256 Columns resulting in 16.777.216 Cells. As this is includes the formatting as well as the values this takes time and memory. Frank *** This issue has been marked as a duplicate of 21243 ***

I agree, that this is a duplicate to 21243 and this behaviour is obvious from a delvelopers point of view. But for the user, OOo hangs. In fakt it doesn't matter, if OOo crashes or hangs for hours (it will even bring your system down, using lots of memory and disk I/O). As I understand, that the momry is really needed (due to the huge amount of cells), there should be at least a warning. Reopen, as the Issue exists.
Maybe this could be discussed by User experience
