Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 38752
OO & SCORM (Sharable Content Object Reference Model)
Last modified: 2013-02-07 22:37:43 UTC
Hello All! Would it be possible to create a feature in OO that would allow it to act as an authoring tool for SCORM (Sharable Content Object Reference Model) with ouput that could be used/plugged into educational software like Moodle or Atutor? (Ilias appears to have created its own home grown version of this.) http://www.adlnet.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=scormabt SC

I think this would be an outstanding addition to Open Office and would set it apart from every other word processor on the planet. However SCORM compliancy is an unknown standard to the average user and I imagine it would take a great deal of effort to create enough interest to include it in the code base. No doubt SCORM will become more popular in the future as online learning becomes more popular and by including in OO it will enable the Open Source movement to increase its development of virtual learning environments an the sharing of learning objects.
Hi Ahooty! Just to provide more information for you to look at, ILias / Authoring tool which uses OpenOffice, iLEX 1.1 - What's new? > Overview http://www.homer.ilias.uni-koeln.de/docu/content/lm_presentation.php?ref_id=160&obj_id=1510 ILias - Home page http://www.ilias.uni-koeln.de/ios/index-e.html Do you think that the folks at OO would work collaboratively with other developers in creating Authoring tools? I know you folks are busy. Will this not be easier when OO goes XML with v2.0? SC WP1
SCORM compliance is becoming increasingly important in the educational sector. A plugin would greatly improve OO compatibility with existing learning environments and would speed OO adoption in schools and universities. Currently SCORM compliance is obtained using commercial plugins (for word) or through existing projects such as Reload or eXe. SCORM compliance in OO would be a massive benefit to education. http://www.exelearning.org/ http://www.reload.ac.uk/
I agree SCORM compatibility will mean that OOo is usefull in learning platforms and VLES. Moodle, the Open Source, VLE supports SCORM and LAMS is work in progress.
