Description vpbroman 2002-04-04 18:10:21 UTC
This happens to me with 641C & 641D. I run Debian 2.2 Potato, kernel 2.2.18, all
pretty vanilla except I have XFree86 4.0.3 on a matrox millenium in 16-bit color.
I'm running KDE 2.1.1 and have piles of extra fonts. Free space in /tmp is
73M (during setup this goes down to 36M) and on /usr/local 220M.

I cd to the dir where I put the tar contents, /usr/local/oo_normal, and as
root or as myself run "./setup". I've also tried "./setep -net".
It writes "glibc version: 2.1.3" to the tty.
The progress bar comes up and goes to 100%. The setup.bin executable is running.
After a minute, the shell prompt comes back, /tmp/sv001.tmp is an empty directory.
Nothing has been installed. No messages appear in logs.

I tried 641D at home on a redhat 7.2 system.
The setup crashes the same way silently,
but I tried running with no KDE (just failsafe mode)
and the xfs serving only the basic fonts, no contrib....
The network install as root and the user install as me
both succeeded, though looking funny with no wm.
When I restarted with KDE and my usual plethora of fonts
served, the openoffice apps crashed on startup (abort).
It looks like some bad interaction with the fonts or the KDE.

The setup works for me at RedHat7.2. Witch XFree version do you use at
this distribution? Please give us further information.
Comment 3 vpbroman 2002-04-16 19:23:06 UTC
The XFree at home is the same as at work, xf4.0.3.
That is clearly not the problem. It is either the fonts
or the desktop, from my comments of 2002-04-05.
WORKSFORME is irrelevant unless you duplicate my xfs and kde.
I'm loathe to do a binary search to try to find the bad font/fonts
among a large list.
I might be able to try a fresh kde setup and minimal fonts.
I wish some log would complain about something, not just silently
die.

At home on redhat, I tried starting up the office app under
kde with a shorter list of fonts served by xfs.
It seems to work now, so the problem seems to be that the
presence of some font or fonts in xfs causes oo to crash on startup.
I'll try to narrow in on which.

I found this information in the discuss list, I hope this could help:

"On IRC we (well, JonC did) just solved a problem that occured on RedHat
and Debian systems, both had a TrueType font ather___.ttf installed
which caused the setup application to allocate an arbitrary amount of
memory and dump core. After removing the font everything went fine.
AFAIK the font is part of some MS web publisher CD or similar.

I tried at work my original environment except for deleting the font:
ATHER___.ttf -2Rebels-Athena-medium-r-normal--0-0-0-0-p-0-iso8859-1
along with the other encodings for the same ttf file.
(I have 256 Mb of RAM so 16 Mb for a font wouldn't hurt in any case.)
The install/setup of 1.0 now ran fine and the app seems to run OK.

This seems to be a good WORKAROUND, if you don't need that 1 font.
The font works with freetype, yudit, and other software.
It may or may not have problems, but the apps must not crash
when it is present. The OOo code still needs a fix.

http://www.jiffycomp.com/smr/unicode/athena.zip
is where you can find the truetype font causing the problems.

I think this is duplicate.

I agree that 4468 is a duplicate, but not that 4468 is resolved.
I will comment there why I think the issue should not be closed.
