Description mrosin 2004-11-22 08:38:41 UTC
There should be a way to gather user interface bug reports during normal
operation and assign a multiple categories, i.e. “Japaneseâ€, “Outlinesâ€, and
“Corrupt character displayâ€. I just spent 1-2 hours inputting the bug reports I
spent more hours looking at and typing up. I think this project has a lot of UI
bugs despite it's being a high version number and getting press all over the
place for three reasons: 1) Word processors are tough, 2) user interaction is
really tough, and 3) the very people you need to have enter UI bug reports are
totally turned off by your bug submission process. A simple web form is another
possibility but not as useful.

Seriously. OO already knows its environment, and who cares what the user name
is. What you need is for people to input the stuff and maintain as high quality
as possible while reducing time to vet it all. I would like to recommend that a
facility is added to OO just for this purpose, including a very detailed way to
(a dynamic outline or faceted metadata navigation equipped dialog?) select your
topic. At the moment I find a number of topics (text boxes, X, font menus,
outlines, tables, ...) to all fall under Formatting, and a similar number under
Editing. Anyway a way for users to type in their (positive or negative)
experience from within OO (say from ANY dialog or menu even!) would be massively
cool and possibly a whole new great thing for open source. You don't want to be
painfully slogging up the hill after MS Word, you want to trounce on it,
demolish it, vaporize it! At the moment a number of absolutely critical
editting functions are so incredibly broken that (as I know first hand) it is
impossible to do real work in a real environment without constantly worrying.
Look at my other issues and please consider the validity of this one. If you
get 10 times as many issues, that's great! Then you can go after a sponsor or
get some high school kids to vet them maybe. Sorry I can't help more. But I had
a burnin' urge to get this document into your QA system and now we'll see if it
has any effect or is ignored. Good luck!

JA->MMP: please have a look at this issue. Esp. at the webpage where Matt
collected a lot of usability enhancements. Reassigning to MMP
JA: modified version, priority and issue type
