Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 36889
automatic names for new files
Last modified: 2013-02-07 22:39:49 UTC
Currently in OOo, if users want to save files of all applications, after they click the "save" or "save as" button, they see one file dialog with empty file names. But actually the window titles show out default file names for them, for example in English: "Untitile1", "Untitile2", and so on. For other languages, there're different names. How about automatically show these default names in the textbox of file dialog when users want to save new files firstly? It seems not too difficult to implement, but it's quite handy for users. A further step for Writer application, is that automatically show the first several words in front of the document as default file name for new files. It need more calculation, but more friendly for users.
retarget to OOo 2.0 as enhancement.
Reset target milestone as no further features get into OO.o 2.0.
bei->glu: the default window names are untitled1, untitled2, ... and so on meaning that the documents have no title (yet) and that in turn is normally not a name under which a user would really want to save a document. So offering these as defaults in the file-save dialog would IMHO be more disturbing than actually useful to the user. On the other hand if the user would have set the document title, via the dialog entry in 'File - Properties - Description' using this value as default filename may be useful.
I came across an issue earlier with a request to use the first line of the text in the document to fill in the default file name. I think MS WOrd does so. In the normal context if the first line contains the title of the document this would be what the user would also like to. That's about Writer, but what about other applications?
To grep the issues easier via "requirements" I put the issues currently lying on my owner to the owner "requirements".
