Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 36401
Insert Video does not work in OOo 1.9.m58 for Linux
Last modified: 2013-08-07 15:21:02 UTC
I updated to the latest OOo development snapshot today (1.9.m58) and tried to insert video into a new presentation. I am greeted with an error message saying that it is not a support file type. No movies I try seem to work. All of them play just fine with mplayer and through mozilla with mplayerplug-in.
I just tried the same, after installing Mozilla plugger instead of mplayerplug-in, and I get the same errors. None of the file formats are recognized. If I launch the media player separately (from the tools menu), I get the same problems. Is there additional configuration that is necessary that is not documented?
The same here with SuSE 9.1 and OOo-1.9.58. So I can confirm this issue. I have tried avi, mov and mpg files, all resulting in an error message ... :(
.. so setting issue status to NEW
Reassigned to Kai. Can you please add some comment her? Thanks in advance.
According to the spec at http://specs.openoffice.org/appwide/media_player/MediaPlayer.sxw you have to install the JavaMedia Framework (JMF) and set the classpath within OOo accordingly. On Unix systems we have only a JMF based backend at the moment which may not be able to play some formats that other media players support. Please take a look at the JMF documentation for supported formats. With current development snapshots of OOo (including m58) you may also get a GPF after inserting a media file and JMF installed. This is related to #i34161 and will work after the integration of CWS vcl28. Resolving this issue as duplicate. BTW: there's been no official announcement of this new feature till now, so this is still work in progress... *** This issue has been marked as a duplicate of 34161 ***

Some comments: - What on earth does this bug have to do with 34161? - There appear to be two ways to handle movies, the "old" Insert Object->Movie and using mplayerplug-in (and or mozilla plugger I guess) and the "new" Java Media Framework. Will both be supported going forward? JMF appears to be quite limited, and the mplayer support is still quite buggy, so both need work.
