Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 34543
On import from word the size of the auto-numbering changed
Last modified: 2008-11-05 20:30:08 UTC
On import of a document from word the size of the numbering created with the "bullets and numbers" feature changes. In the document I am attaching to this issue the numbers got smaller after import into OOo (It is not clear to me if the type of font changed as well).

What version of OOo are you using? Probably not 1.0.0 as you reported in the "VERSION" field above.
FYI I'm using 1.1.4 on Linux. - If I open the document with MS Word 2000, the first date (2003-2001) after point 2.1 is fontsize 12 - If I open the document in Writer, the first date is fontsize 10

I've deleted all text except the date "2003-2001". As said before, when this document is opened in MS Word 2000, the font size is 12. When it's opened in 1.1.4 Writer, the font size is 10.
I compared size relation with 1.1.4 (German) WIN XP: [645m52(Build8824)] and WORD2000 in attached 'compare.sxd': - textflow_no_chart.sxw, opened with 1.1.4 - textflow_no_chart.doc opened with WORD2000 - textflow_no_chart.doc opened with 1.1.4 I can not see any difference in size relation 'numbering' to 'text' I can confirm that numbering is "Times New Roman 10px" and Text ist "David 12px) in OOo. Unfortunately I can not see any information concerning numbering text size in WORD 2000. Need more Info: Reporter, can you try to check size relations on your PC similar to my 'compare.sxd'? Reporter, do you see that effect only in hebrew texts?

Confirmed. There is some difference between the way the text appears in Word and how it appears in Writer. Take for instance lines 2.1.2 and 2.1.3 in the text of the attached Word document. 2.1.2 appears on one line in Word and two in Writer. 2.1.3 appears on 6 lines in Word and 8 lines in Writer. Using OOo 1.9.77. Changing this issues version number to 1.1.4, since that is the number the reporter actually indicated they first saw it in.
Can someone confirm this with 2.4.0 ?
I think there is no problem in OOo 2.4.0 Checked under Linux/deb Kubuntu
Although I am not 100% sure... I think the problem is: Writer classifies numbers always as Western text. Numbers in Hebrew paragraphs get the language attribute English (provided English is the current language for Western text). They are always displayed with the current Western font. The attached document has set Times New Roman as the Western font, and David as the CTL font. Word displays the numbers (in my opinion correctly) with the David font, as they are embedded in Hebrew text, so their context should be CTL / Hebrew. Writer on the other hand chooses the Western font: Times New Roman and language attribute English. This issue is not a problem of Word import. It is a problem of how Writer handles the language of numbers. It also has an impact on other issues, e.g. issue 22396. If a "context mode" for displaying numerals in Arabic language (Hindi numerals) should be implemented, a number would require the appropriate language attribute. The problem has been mentioned in issue 19012. Maybe the solution found for issue 16354 (punctuation characters) could be extended to digits?
already with OO 2.3 (on fedora 8) this issue seems to be OK. i have both David and Times New Roman so the document is displayed visually correct. when David is set to 12pt and Times to 10pt. since they have different height matrix sizes, this relation between them is good. i partly agree with hennerdrewes: in general, i think numbers should get their size from the characters around them so they do not stand out or stand down in relation to CTL or Western fonts. using Aharoni CLM for both CTL and Western fonts with the same size shows this document correctly as well. and i think the import if working just fine too :-)
I opened issue 89825 to deal specifically with the script type for numbers. @nadavkav: Of course you can set the font sizes of Western and CTL fonts in such a manner, that you won't feel so much the effects of this issue. But be aware: If you have a close look, you'll see that David and Times New Roman actually are very different in their typeface, especially with digits and punctuation characters (while the letters A-z are actually quite the same). So the issue is not about the size alone. For more details, please have a look at issue 89825.
@hennerdrewes: i agree :-) ( i read http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=89825 too ) but i am not sure what the solution should be ;-)
I believe hennerdrewes is correct, and numbers in RTL context should use a CTL font, as will be the case when his patch to Issue 89825 will be in an OOo release. The question of how the font's number glyphs look is a font issue, and should not affect the code. Since the issue has been handled elsewhere, I'll close it as a duplicate. *** This issue has been marked as a duplicate of 89825 ***
