Description quetschke 2004-08-14 10:51:57 UTC
See the following document for the problem, it is impossible to display the
technical symbol for 1/1000000 m (micrometer) correctly in the formula editor:

* %mu is always italic and ignores nitalic
(metrical units are required to be normal font, not italic)

* there is no possibility to remove the space between {%mu}{m}.

Micrometer is only an example to illustrate the general problem. This missing
functionality has a big negative impact on technical documents.

You can write units as text.
1.2"μm"
Use normal text to get the μ and transfer it via clipboard to the formula editor.
Comment 3 quetschke 2004-08-14 16:02:46 UTC
Yes, I can confirm that it works with the mu of the Times New Roman font.
In my first try I used the Symbol font, but that mu corresponds to an 'm'.

It would be nice to have the "Special Character ..." menu available from the
formula editor.

TL->BH: Having a 'Insert special character' menu entry like in sw seems to be
the best solution to this. Since that would be a request for enhancement I'll
assign this to you for decision.

Comment 7 Joe Smith 2010-08-14 17:31:31 UTC
I believe this issue can be closed as FIXED due to updates in two areas:
Non-italic Greek in updated OpenSymbol font: Issue 113276
New nospace keyword included in OOo 3.3: Issue 109020

There is also a workaround independent of these updates: instead of a math
symbol, express the unit as a text constant and enter the mu as a character:
"μm" (U+03bc).

This workaround requires that your system provide some way of typing that
particular character, however, since OOo Math does not support the Insert >
Special Character function (Issue 14559).

Oops--sorry. I missed the previous comments about using text "μm".
