Description tudor_00 2004-08-02 22:15:40 UTC
Hi.

This applies to both versions 1.0 and 1.1. On a dual-monitor system, where the
desktop spans two side-by-side monitors, Open Office documents display
incorrectly, in the sense that their aspect ratios DO NOT CORRESPOND to what one
would expect from the documents' height and width settings. In fact, the
relative width of the displayed documents (both text and drawing docs) appears
to be twice as big as it should be, in a way mirroring the fact that the virtual
desktop is twice as wide as a single monitor screen. I should also mention that
this seems to affect only the aspect ratio of the page, without also distorting
the graphics displayed on the page itself.

This also applies to Open Office running remotely but displaying through the X
server of the dual-monitor system. As I'm sure you realize, this is extremely
annoying, since OpenOffice is my only word processor for Linux.

BTW, I haven't noticed this problem with any other application.

Thank you.

reassigned to SBA.
Set MSC on cc; referring to tudor's description this also applies to Drawing
documents.

SBA->tudor_00: Please verify your findings with a younger version of OOo.
To download OOo 1.1.4:
http://download.openoffice.org/1.1.4/index.html
To download OOo 1.9.XX (OOo 2.0 dev build):
http://download.openoffice.org/680/index.html

... and comment. Thank you.

Please note that the OOo 2.0 developer build is the version the SUN developers
are working on. OOo 1.1.5 will get only fixes for major problems or ugly
regressions. And OOo 2.0 will be probably available before OOo 1.1.5.

Thank you for the message. Version 1.1.4 seems to have fixed the aspect ratio
problem and works fine. Also, 1.1.3 running remotely seems to display correctly
on the dual monitor system. (I don't remember if this was the case before; could
it be due to the newer version of the kernel or X server now running on this
system?)

The only problem that I can see now is that 1.1.4 displays incorrectly the text
in presentation and text documents I had created with version 1.1.3. The
characters in a line, as well as the lines in a page, are bunched together and
overlap. I don't know if this happens with all, or only some of, the fonts in
1.1.3. Also, I've only installed 1.1.4 on the dual monitor system, so I don't
know if the same thing happens on the single monitor systems. I'll let you know.

Thanks again,
Tudor Buican

OK, I installed 1.1.4 on a single monitor system (RH 9) and it works just fine
with the files created with 1.1.3. The same is true of 1.1.4 running on the
dual-monitor system but displaying on the single monitor system--and the other
way round. So, it's only when running AND displaying on the dual monitor system
(RH Enterprise Workstation) that 1.1.4 doesn't properly display the text from
files created with 1.1.3.

Hope this helps. In the meantime, there's a working combination no matter what
workstation I'm using!

Thanks,
-Tudor Buican

check the dpi settings for you dual-head configuration. Probably this is messed up.
