From the start menu select  
Start - Programs - Openoffice.org 642 Drawing.

OpenOffice.org crashes with unrecoverable error.
The same error occurs when attempting to open a new Formula, Html, Presentation
or Spreadsheet document. Also fails when attempting to open graphic file types.

OpenOffice.org can successfully open a new text or master type document.
