Description falko.tesch 2004-04-01 14:09:48 UTC
FT: Many people asked for OpenOffice.org writer to count not only the number of
words in complete documents but also in slections made.
OpenOffice.org Writer has a new menu entry that allows the user to count all
characters and words of the current selection made.
This specification is a spin-off of issue 17964.

FT->FME: Please review the spec and add comments if necessary. Thx.

The Word count feature over selection(s) should count at least the number of
characters both with and without spaces, words, paragraphs and pages.
It would be nice if it would also display the percentage of the selection's
counts out of the complete count (i.e. Selection has: X words (Y% of total Z
document words).
Maybe it would be better to close issue 17964 and open a new issue with advanced
specification for additional features, that will be left out of this basic
implementation.

I noticed this:

Microsoft Word counts three words in this text:

This is three/words

OOo Writer counts four? Is this an error or should words seperated by / count
as seperate words? I guess somebody has made official rules for that?

My publisher counts your example as four words. Also counts "and/or" as two
words.

SBA: See issue 17964 for a future implementation of a more powerful word count.
As far as I know there is no rule covering word seperators. Before the break
iterator took over, there was an editable list of word seperators, so everyone
could decide himself, how an URL, a file path, an e-mail adress, you-name-it
should be treated. So you'd better post your comments into that issue.
