Description erikanderson3 2004-03-27 04:37:37 UTC
Copying a section of text in Writer that contains smart quotes and pasting said section
as a DDE link turns the smart quotes in the paste into two-character gibberish. The
original copied section is unharmed. Retyping the quotes in the source segment has no
discernible effect.

(Attempted to verify on Linux, but there is no option to paste as a DDE link on Linux)

Could not reproduce using OOo1.1 or OOo1.1.1 on Win2k - found a similar insert
dde link related problem though.

I've had problems with non-ASCII characters turning into gibberish when I embed
a spreadsheet inside a Writer document and then access a Calc document via =DDE.
It turns out that the problem there is the LANG setting; if I have en_US.UTF-8,
I get gibberish. If I have en_US, it's fine.

Jensja -->
Sorry to be so long. Just tried with 1.1.1 in Win2K, same problem still extant.
 Will attach sample Writer doc.

Slothman -->
Interesting. I gather then you did this under Linux?

For any devs watching -->
I have to use the .UTF-8 setting under Linux to get Japanese input with an
English UI (as detailed at http://www.math.wisc.edu/~stefanss/japanese/ ), and I
gather I'm not alone in using this kludge, with reports of use for Swedish and
Chinese input among others. Simply requiring users not to utilize .UTF-8 is not
a welcome solution.

Reassigned to ES

I cannot reproduce it.
(pasting the quotes included in your sample doc as DDE still shows correct smart
- curly -quotes)
Which locale do you use on Windows?
Can you still reproduce it in a current build?

The machine I've seen the problem on is office material, and I barely managed to
get 1.1.1 on here. Sorry, but this is the most recent I can get you for now. I
may still be able to get my hands on a similar install for my home machine
later, and then try with a more recent OOo build.

More setup detail: Win2K Pro Japanese, all patches up to date (AFAICT). MSO 97
(US English version) and 98 (Japanese version) do not exhibit the same symptom
when pasting as a link.

Finally able to try out OOo 1.1.2, and this problem still appears for me. I'll
attach a sample .sxw with a similar DDE link including smart quotes in the
source section, and paste in a screenshot so you can see on your end how it
looks for me, even if you can't reproduce the symptoms.

Current setup:

- OOo 1.1.2
- WinXP, customized corporate version, all patches up to date afaict
- English (US) locale in the OS, with Japanese support enabled.

Any other questions, I'll be happy to answer them.

Smart quotes DDE link problem in 1.1.2
Comment 10 urska 2005-04-18 19:53:04 UTC
hi
i have a similar problem:
-OS: Win XP, english (en_UK) environment
-OOo1.1.2: slovenian build (sl_SI)

problem: when pasting data from calc spreadsheet, all special characters (those
with diacritic marks) are turned into '?'

pretty annoying, so i voted for it.
thanks
Comment 11 eric.savary 2005-06-14 12:24:10 UTC
-> rsacol02: your problem has probably nothing to do with the current issue (no
reference to DDE link, "?" instead of garbage chars, copy from Calc to Writer).
Please file another issue for this *if you can style reproduce it in a current
developper build*.
Comment 12 eric.savary 2005-06-14 12:26:32 UTC
ES->MBA: can DDE display such "special characters"?
Tested on Linux, copy/pasting from Wrtier to Writer or to Calc as DDE -> custom
quotes are replaced by trash characters.
