Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 26640
Start mail trailer with "-- "
Last modified: 2009-07-12 19:02:28 UTC
Hi, several people are still learning how to use their mail client efficiently and they cite the whole previous letter even with the signature that was added automatically by list software to the previous message. Thus we have often to read something like: > > --------------------------------------------------------------------- > > To unsubscribe, e-mail: com-unsubscribe@native-lang.openoffice.org > > For additional commands, e-mail: com-help@native-lang.openoffice.org > --------------------------------------------------------------------- > To unsubscribe, e-mail: com-unsubscribe@native-lang.openoffice.org > For additional commands, e-mail: com-help@native-lang.openoffice.org --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: com-unsubscribe@native-lang.openoffice.org For additional commands, e-mail: com-help@native-lang.openoffice.org This is very inefficient and if are not able to educate those people, we have to force those rules by the software itself. Thus I propose this: before adding the signature of the conference - e.g. "For additional commands, e-mail: com-help@native-lang.openoffice.org", check if this string is already there. If it is, please automatically reject that e-mail *with* the link to our mailing list guidelines (http://www.openoffice.org/ml_guidelines.html).

louis: thanks! I'm now moderating Czech users list (to lower the virus/false bounce virus impact) and apply that rule manually and Czech users are now quite disciplined.
Beril: Can we (easily) locally change emai footers? Louis
Louis, we do not want to "change email footers". We want to *reject* mails *already* containing signature because if we add a new signature, there are *two* instances of the signature.
reassigning to support We have to keep in mind that there are sublists. http://www.openoffice.org/servlets/ReadMsg?list=allfeatures&msgNo=2042 So the has to be the one for the list in question. I would prefer to make this "educationcal" measure optional and allow for rejecting the message or warning the sender.
Many mail clients will automatically remove this signature if it is in the standard form i.e. '-- ' as the first line of the signature. It would seem much more sensible to me to change the signatures to this format than to start rejecting emails on this ground.
I agree with David. We should first test if it helps.
There seems to be no activity until st (?) tells CN to do something. st: can you please tell them to add "-- " before so called "trailer"?
We should move forward with the idea to use "-- ". -- Thanks to David Stefan
changing title accordingly from "Reject e-mails *already* containing the signature"
st: can we change the trailer somehow without support to test it before their start to work on this? BTW - this convention is mentioned in RFC3676, in section 4.3 Usenet Signature Convention.
Sorry Pavel, we can not. We can change the explanatory text in issue notifications and let those start with "-- ", but that wouldn't help you for other lists. Greetings, Stefan
Hi Stefan, With all the updates, I want to be sure we are requesting what you would like to see happen here. Can you state exactly what you would like to see happen concerning this issue? Thanks, Eric
The summary says it all: Start the mail trailer with "-- " (without quotes) on a single line. This would avoid the quoting of trailers because the trailer would be seen as signature by most mail clients.
Thanks Stefan, I just wanted to be sure we are requesing the correct solution here. I opened pcn28728 to have this enhancement put into place. Eric
Hi, what is the status of this issue? Have you discovered something problematic when adding four characters (dash, dash, space,cr) at the beginning of trailers?
Yes, the priority of this issue sets it behind many others right now.
So, the basic problem with: --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: com-unsubscribe@native-lang.openoffice.org For additional commands, e-mail: com-help@native-lang.openoffice.org is that the dash line has too many dashes? You are asking for: -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: com-unsubscribe@native-lang.openoffice.org For additional commands, e-mail: com-help@native-lang.openoffice.org Is that the crux of this request?
No, there should be two dashes (as you said), but they must be followed by a space: -- not -- The '-- ' sequence is interpreted correctly by for example mozilla mail and affects quoting. See for example RFC3676 (quoting the relevant section): http://www.zvon.org/tmRFC/RFC3676/Output/chapter4.html 4.3. Usenet Signature Convention There is a long-standing convention in Usenet news which also commonly appears in Internet mail of using "-- " as the separator line between the body and the signature of a message.
We already have an open enhancement request to allow for customization of mailing list trailer text. Noting this in the whiteboard.
Related OpenOffice Issue 30746 is also updated.
*** Issue 30746 has been marked as a duplicate of this issue. ***
*** Issue 46911 has been marked as a duplicate of this issue. ***
What is the status of this? Can't we simply add four character "minusminusspacenewline" somewhere???
support, would you be able to respond to this? Thanks Louis
As far as I can see there are no updates on this. There is a move to re- factor/architect the mailing lists in future versions. Checking to see if this particular request can be resolved in the interim.
Aniruddha Sarkar: are you still checking?
Hi, This issue is not going to be addressed in the near future; at least not from an enhancement point of view. Although this request seems trivial enough, unfortunately a core product code change is required. Offcourse there are big plans by CN for the implementation of Discussion Services, which is the replacement for ezmlm/anzu/mailing lists. Again something that is not going to happen soon. However, if this issue is considered critical enough, then a request may be created to impelement this through an instance-set. It remains to be seen if the SUN Account will agree to accept this as an important enough issue for another custom work.
The new Discussion Services available in CEE Rubicon allows the ability to add customer footers for each discussion list. Setting the Target Milestone to reflect the correct milestone. Regards, Karishma Support Operations
Please note that a custom footer for every list is not the preferred solution. A central change to the way the trailer is build would be much more helpful.
CollabNet Support is currently reviewing the issues under Resolved-Later. If the issues are fixed currently in any of the present CEE releases, then it will be marked as Resolved-Fixed. There might be a few issues which might not be in our future roadmap which might be closed as Wontfix unless it does not lie under any custom request.
Keeping this open for validation
Marking it as wontfix since we would be able to implement this as domain-wide. As specified in desc30, we are keeping it specified to each discussion.
