Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 2612
Menus and messages are no longer displayed after XFree 4.0.3 crash
Last modified: 2003-05-08 20:34:03 UTC
It happened several times that OO blocks XFree, and I have to kill it the two. After having restarted XFree 4.0.3 on Debian Testing menus and messages in the windows are not displayed any more. I tryied to delete the OO directory and reinstall it, but neither in the setup the messages are displayed any more. The only turn around until now has been to reinstall from scratch XFree and then running OO setup. I can send you screenshots of the problem. It never happened with SO6 beta.

Reassigned to Ulf.
I found a way to circumvent this issue: I disabled Freetype from /etc/XF86Config-4. When truetype fonts are not enabled openoffice works...
Created attachment 960 [details] voilà, no fonts!
US->Emanuele Gissi: pls try XFree86 4.2.0 as 4.0.3 was known to have some annoying bugs. US->HDU: Possible interference between 'our' FreeType and the system's?
Which Version of OO641 do you use? 641C? Upgrading to XFree 4.2.0 would probably help. What does xset -q report where the font path is?
I am now using XFree 4.1.0. The problem is still there. I am sorry I cannot install XFree 4.2.0 as long as it's not packaged for Debian Unstable... I am rather sure the problem is a bad interaction with XFree FreeType. If I comment (thus exclude) FreeType form XF86Config, OO works as expected, but I don't have truetype fonts any more for KDE applications. Hope this helps! I remain at your disposal, thanks for your work.
Here is the result of xset -q (with FreeType disabled): Font Path: /usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc,/usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/:unscaled,/usr/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/:unscaled,/usr/lib/X11/fonts/Type1,/usr/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo,/usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi,/usr/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi
How reproducible is the problem? Does it hang reliably when you enable ft in the XConfig? Where are the truetype fonts located? In the font path I didn't see a directory for truetype fonts. Is there anything special with this directory, e.g. permissions, file system type, mount options?
It does not hang; OO continues to work as if nothing was happened. But no menu font is displayed any more. Notice that editing text is correctly displayed. This happens very reliably when I enable ft in the XF86Config. The truetype dir is the following: FontPath "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType" This are its properties: drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Feb 5 09:06 TrueType The Xftconfig is the one distributed with the deb package antialias-howto. I can send that to you if needed.
Created attachment 1031 [details] This is clear: Freetype, Xft or whatelse killed the menus!
We are not using the Xft library, only the render extension, so the Xft configuration shouldn't make a difference for us. What happens when you go to Tools->Options->StarOffice->FontReplacement and add this replacement: Andale Sans UI -> Tahoma
To make OO work it is enough to comment Freetype extension in XF86Config-4. If I make: Tools->Options->OpenOffice->FontReplacement and add this replacement: User Interface -> Tahoma The interface changes its font. Then I restart X with Freetype enabled and menus don't appear. I tryed also with User Interface -> Helvetica (the most common font): not working.
Very strange... Something seems to prevent us from accessing the font files when the FT module is loaded. You seem to be using KDE. Does disabling antialiasing there help? What happens when you copy the *ttf fonts into the $(OOoHOME)/share/fonts/truetype directory?
I don't use antialiasing under kde. Copying ttf fonts in OOoHOME)/share/fonts/truetype directory does not change anything.
Can you attach the file strace.txt.bz2 that you get from strace -f soffice 2>&1 >strace.txt bzip2 -9 strace.txt Run it and close the window when the window comes up.
> Run it and close the window when the window comes up. Well, the splash screen opened, but the main window never got out. After two hours or so I killed the process. Is this strace.txt enough for you? Let me know, please.

In line 191 of $(OOHOME)/program/soffice there is #SAL_ANTIALIAS_DISABLE=true; export SAL_ANTIALIAS_DISABLE Please remove the first character (#) in this line and save the file. Then restart Office. Also please run hte xdpyinfo command and attach the result here.

I removed the # in line 191 of $(OOHOME)/program/soffice as you asked me. Sorry but nothing changes, menus are still not displayed. I attached the results of xdpyinfo, too.
Well, I cannot recreate the same bug in other computers identically configurated that we have in our office. So, I will try (when possible) to reinstall XFree from scratch and let you know what changes on my computer.
any news on the problem?
Cannot recreate.
As mentioned on the qa dev list on March 5th I will close all resolved <wontfix/duplicate/worksforme/invalid> issues. Please see this posting for details. First step in IssueZilla is unfortunately to set them to verified.

I am experiencing the same problem with RedHat 9.0 and OO 1.0.3 after an upgrade from RedHat 8.0 and OO 1.0.1. I kept both versions of OO in /usr/local and made a link to OO 1.0.3. When I point the link back to OO 1.0.1 all menus and messages in 1.0.1 works. When the link points to OO 1.0.3 all menus and messages disapears.
