Description blommaep 2004-03-01 20:19:04 UTC
When opening an excel file with the formula STDEV() used, the result is
different then in excel.

According to the excel help:
Logical values such as TRUE and FALSE and text are ignored. If logical values
and text must not be ignored, use the STDEVA worksheet function.

As it shows in excel: If I calculate an stdev over a range of cells,
the cells containing text (empty text string) and the empty cells (containing
really nothing, no text, no number, no formula,...) are ignored for the
calculation.

As it shows in OOo 1.1:
these cells simply cause an error (#VALUE) in the result cell

(Whatever the concept of STDEV may be on OO, when opening an excel file/saving
an excel file, it should behave identical.)

Hi,

I could not reproduce your problem.

Please attach a document showing it.

I'm deeply ashamed, as I can't reproduce myself.
(I have one version of the spreadsheet kept, where I had the problem, and it
seems most likely that I misintrepreted the problem:
Due to other (nonOO) problems, I ended up with only one value and a lot of empty
strings. STDEV over one value does not exist obviously.
I've been playing with the formula as such, but I haven't kept those. I think it
is a non issue. Next time I'll sleep over it before I submit. Sorry)
