Description geofffarrell 2004-02-22 04:32:00 UTC
Open a new spreadsheet and rename 'Sheet1' to 'Test1'. Click in cell A5. Open
the Define Names dialog. Enter the name 'TestRange' and select 'Add'. Insert
'Matrix' in the name box. Insert the following specification in the 'Assigned
to' box:

$Test1.$A$1;$Test1.$B$2:$D$2;$Test1.$B$3:$D$3;$Test1.$A$4

then click on 'Add', then 'OK'. Re-select range B4:D5 (a contiguous selection).
Open the Define Names dialog. Enter the name 'Block' and select 'Add' and
'OK'. Click in cell A5. 'TestRange' appears in the formula bar's drop-down
box. Click in any of the cells B4:D5. 'Block' appears in the the formula bar.
Clicking in any of the cells A1, B2:D3 or A4 does not make 'Matrix' appear in
the formula bar. This shows that single or contiguous cells' named ranges are
shown in the formula bar's drop-down box when one of their contained cells are
selected, and that this does not work for non-contiguous cells' named ranges.
Making named ranges for non-contiguous cells appear in the formula bar's
drop-down box when ckicking in one of their contained cells, as happens for
single and contiguous cells, would be a good enhancement for consistency and
productivity. This is the default behaviour for Excel, for example.

Presently, the only way of seeing if a particular cell is contained within a
non-contiguous named range is to open the Define Names dialog and click on all
the named ranges to see if the cell appears in the highlighted cells thus
produced. This is cumbersome and impractical for large spreadsheets with many
named ranges.

Sorry, this should have been entered as an Enhancement.
