For a datapilot created from sheet data I can find no way of accessing the
DataPilotSource service, such as to set/get the RowGrand property.

I also can't find anyway of accessing datapilots created from a datasource.

If this is just me being thick please forgive me, but I have spent a lot of time
searching for this, and so any pointers would be greatly appreciated.  I have
posted a request in the OpenOffice.org Macros and API forum but have not had any
response.

DataPilotSource isn't supposed to be accessible from a DataPilotTable. It's the
service that external components can implement to supply their own results.

In OOo 2.0 the service DataPilotDescriptor has properties "ColumnGrand" and
"RowGrand".
