Description urshaegeli 2004-02-12 12:50:11 UTC
Hi there,

I noticed the following behavior/malfunction with printing of serial letters:

- I selected ONLY ONE record in the correspondig dialogbox

- With desination FILE everything works fine, BUT with destination PRINTER all
  database fields of the document are replaced by the content of the fields.

  As a result you get a "normal" writer document without any database fields.
  Each time you want to reprint the serial letter you do have to insert all
  database fields again.

  Kind regards

  Urs Haegeli

Confirmed with OOo1.1.1b official linux build

1. Create a new document
2. Insert a mailmerge-field (f.e.:biblio.author)
3. Tools -> Mailmerge
4. Keep "From this document" as it is. Click OK
5. Records: All. Output:Printer -> OK
[ 6. In the printer dialog mark "Print to file" to save paper ]
7. Click ok in the printer dialog

THEN:

8. Mailmerge-document will have the mailmerge-field from [2.] replaced with
first entry of mailmerge-datasource

- This is irritating, because if user wants to keep the original document, he
will have to explecitely deny changes to the document.
- If for step 5. user selects output to file, mailmerge-field will not be
replaced. This is somehow inconsistent.

As Urs stated:
>> Each time you want to reprint the serial letter you do have to insert all
>>  database fields again.

Workaround: Edit / Undo will not work (greyed out), but File -> Reload presents
original document again.

HI->OS: Please comment.
From my point of view, it is like to monitor the print process and the last
entry will shown on screen.
To get the expect (unmodified document), just choose "File" at MailMerge dialog.

The field is not replaced by text but only the content from the database is
merged into it. It is not necessary to re-insert the field.

But to prevent confusion it would be better to restore the fields after mail
merging.
