The number in the field reference to illustration 2 should be 2, but it is 1.

Hi simonbr,

thanks for using and supporting OpenOffice...

I think you missed the last step:

You need to do the following:

Insert -> Field -> Other, tab References, Illustration: Illustration 2 ==> Numbering

If you only do 
         Insert -> Field -> Other, tab References, Illustration: Illustration 2 
there's a word highlighted in the right field: "page" 
==> this inserts the page of the reference ( in this case: page [1])
