Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 24923
Borders as graphics
Last modified: 2017-05-20 10:44:42 UTC
I have frequently in my various experiences over the past 10 years seen numerous incidents when people have used borders on documents (from posters to certificates) for decorative effect. It is not reasonably possible in OOo unless you already have a suitable image of the border as OOo is currently only able to create borders which are straight lines. I currently face the choice of preparing an image for someone to use on a certificate or installing CrossOver Office so they can revert to Word 97. Please add some form of additional border capability to OOo. Perhaps simply allow you to select a border which is actually edge, end and corner pieces (preferably vector based) which are duplicated, rotated and stretched to create the border on an item?
Yes -- Yes! I have had to go to Windows and run PrintShop to get this or to MS word. I would love to have this feature in OOo.

Do it! Do it! This feature may finally get me all the way out of WordPerfect and into OO. Add a few more graphics filters and you can have my large border collection. Awards, presentations, posters, title pages! Full frames, corners, vertical and horizontal lines! Mostly wpg, cgm and wmf.

Add it! Kids love this art page borders. How can I convince my son to use OO without art page borders. We need kids to grab the parket portion from MS...
Both my wife and daughter are teachers. It's quite amazing how often they request this feature for their teaching materials. At the minimum it would stop my ear getting bent. This one issue is a sore point in my quest to convert them.
Hi Mathias, I have changed the current owner to your owner. Please take the ownership of these enhancements.

I think this is the first fundamental thing I've come across that's missing from Writer since ditching Word a couple of years ago. It would be a really useful addition. Thanks.
It would be a great addition for me too. I create fliers for my partners storytelling, my belly dance classes, our medieval banquet entertainment, all of which would look massively more professional if I could put elegant borders on them - my partner similarly would find it very useful. It would make it a truly professional tool. Additional point: as it is in word being able to chose a design and then adapt the colour is an important part of this being useful. EG in word one can select a set of celtic knotwork and then chose to have it in dark green, or any other colour and thus set of work very nicely. This is the only real flaw I've found in this tool compared to the others so it really would be the icing on the cake for me. (and save no end of favours owed with getting people with word to create pdfs of stationary for me which I have to convert to a background picture in order to even try to replicate it and that has no end of inherent issues, not least keeping a margin between the border and the text consistent.
I produce a lot of community posters and flyers. The omission of graphic page borders is the only deficiency in OOo that I have come across. Please . . . .

Wow, this issue was raised like more than 7 years ago, and nothing was done. Can I say "wow" again? To be honest because of this "little" issue I can't recommend it to other people. You (OpenOffice crew) have to understand youre audience. You're audience is in a large part students and teachers who need to prepare their documents, and who need for style sake to add a graphical border. Other people need to print booklets that need a graphical border as well. Others need to print certifcations as someone else commented earlier. So I'm trying to understand why this issue is getting so less attention. If this will never be done it should be stated so, if not, there should be a deadline for it, or a version that will include it. Without a deadline nothing will be done, really. P.S. Because of this "little" issue, I bought Microsoft Office 2007 and use it ever since.
This is important! Many documents require non-trivial borders, whether they be writer documents (such as certificates) or Impress documents. Not having this possibility reduces OO to less than a complete solution.
Hey, what's this? My email address shows, ripe for harvesting by any spider! I can't even delete my comment to make this undone. Powers that be, please immediately remove me from this list - you can delete my account, as I don't want to be a member of something as rude as this. Thank you!
Just a comment that, if you made the box borders support the Unicode box characters, I'm sure there would be plenty of people who would make fonts that have special borders, without the OpenOffice team having to create lots of borders.
