Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 24359
No scrolling with notebook trackpoint
Last modified: 2005-09-02 09:37:35 UTC
Hello, within OO 1.1.0 (word processor, spreadsheet, etc.) scrolling doesn't work on my notebooks (IBM Thinkpad T22, with Win2000 SP4) trackpoint (minijoystick): Pressing the Center button shows the "Scrolling"-icon, but moving the trackpoint has no effect. With my wheelmouse, scrolling by wheel works. So first I thought it's a problem of the trackpoint driver. But it's a new driver and scrolling works with all, really all other programs - except OO... Dirk
HI->TM: Sounds like framework
TM->BH: As talked to GW, this is more an enhancement than a defect. Some apps. provide the scroll-ability of this minijoystick (like MSIE or MS-Office), others don´t (like Mozilla). We should support this feature too. So please have a look, Thanks !
Hello tm, I don't know which release of Mozilla *you* got, but mine (1.4 Win) supports my trackpoint very well. ;-) Indeed, OpenOffice is really-really the only application I have, that doesn't. :-( Thanks nonetheless! Dirk

os->ssa: I have an Acer Aspire 1353 and scrolling doesn't work either (Windows XP Home). I suspect that a lot of notebooks have similar scroll tools and that there's a Windows API that's not supported by VCL. Re-targetted to 2.0, Component changed to gsl.

according to the announcement on releases (http://www.openoffice.org/servlets/ReadMsg?list=releases&msgNo=7503) this issue will be re-targeted to OOo Later.

Scrolling with this kind of trackpoints/drivers is implemented in an awkward way. Instead of submitting mousewheel messages the drivers look for a visible Windows scrollbar control in the active window and temporarily position the mouse pointer over a button of this scrollbar and issue button down events in order to 'scroll'. Because OOo has no native Windows scrollbar but paints its scrollbars by itself, the driver has no chance to find this control. The obvious solution would be to use a native scrollbar. However, this is not as simple as it sounds and would require severe changes. May be this can be attacked for the next major release.

In fact there is a workaround as described in issue 53249, which means I don't have to implement weird hacks to get a native scrollbar! Thanks to jpdumoulin for finding that out! *** This issue has been marked as a duplicate of 53249 ***
