Description jbotte 2004-01-06 15:22:36 UTC
In the software that I have previously been used to, it is possible to specify
page layout measurements (margins, object sizes, drawing component sizes, tabs,
rulers, etc.) in a "ruler" measurement (inches or cm (it allows for picas and
points as well)) and style related measurements (indents, line spacing,
inter-paragraph spacing, etc.) in "typographical" measurements (picas or points
(it allows for inches or cm as well)).

Coming from a design and layout background, I miss this ability in OO which just
seems to have the global "Measurement unit" setting in "Options...". I "think"
in different units for these different tasks, and find myself changing the
"Measurement unit" setting back and forth between inches (in my case) and points
depending on what I'm trying to do.

The ruler measurement unit can be set independently of the global measurement
unit, but all measurements other than the ruler (including tab stops) use the
global measurement unit.

This won't resolve the issue, of course, but it might help a few people in the
short term who would at least like to use either inches or cm for the ruler
while being able to leave the general measurement units on pts for working with
the style.

It might also help to state that I believe there are 72 pts per inch.

The best solution is of course to allow every measurement unit to be chosen
indepently of all others.

Out of votes currently, but would like to voice my support for this issue. While
the general units of measurement may be cm or inches, points is what makes most
sense for paragraph spacing, since decision about this spacing is based
primarily on font size.

To grep the issues easier via "requirements" I put the issues currently lying on
my owner to the owner "requirements".
