Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 24054
Add ability to remove bitmap background
Last modified: 2013-02-07 22:43:08 UTC
Bitmap images are always retangular, eventhough the contents are not necessarily. So say you have a bitmap which the actual contenting is an irregular blob in the middle with a green background everywhere else. Now I want to build a drawing that has just my blob without the background allowing me to have the bitmap on top of say another bitmap but not show the green background or the retangular outline of the bitmap object. I could do this in GIMP/Photoshop but that is a lot of complex steps and only result in a bitmap. If OOo Draw (ideally the functionality would work with drawings in all applications) would give me a formating option "Hide Background" (say a right click on the object and under the format menu). That would pop up a dialog box that would have a before and after preview of the bitmap (similar to the "Convert to Polygon" dialog). You could click anywhere on the preview to select the background color that would set RGB values that would be shown in the dialog and could be set manually. The dialog would also have a fuzziness factor that the user would set (0 for exact color match, 1 for + and - one color level, 2 for + and - two color levels, etc.) which the program would clear out colors that were either exact matches or close. Finally there would be another value on the dialog for "feathering" this would be how many pixels from the edge of the object to include (value could be positive or negative).
This has also been an issue for me. It takes too long to do it with gimp but that's my only option at the present time.

I believe what is being asked for can done with the Tools -> Eyedropper (I am running OOo 1.1). Touch the eyedropper to the colour to replace, and have the replacement colour being "Transparent". I do have to suggest that it is not at all clear from a user interface perspective that the Eyedropper would be the method of doing this. Since it's such a common function, it might make more sense to have a seperate "Transparency" menu item/dialogue.
Ooops... just realized that I also had white text grouped with my objects that was also lost in the white background...
Hmm, I have been using OOo Drawing for several years and never noticed that before. Works pretty well, a bit confusing interface. Still has problem though, if you export PDF it does not maintain transparency (assuming that PDF supports that ability). I just tested it a it does seem to print properly on a postscript printer. If you print through a pdf converter (not use the built in pdf exporter) it does retain transparency) so that is a bug.
